University of Utah to Graduate 8,007 Students on May 2

General commencement ceremonies at the University of Utah will be held on Thursday, May 2 at 6:30 p.m. in theJon M. Huntsman Center. Scheduling the event in the evening begins a new tradition intended to make the ceremonies more readily accessible to students and their families. Commencement is free and open to the public; no tickets are required.

LGBT 2013 Ally Awareness Week Features Hate Crime Victim Erin Davies

The theme for this year’s Ally Awareness Week at the University of Utah (the U) will be “Stand. Speak. Act.” Organized annually by the LGBT Resource Center, activities will take place Monday, April 15 through Friday, April 19. Derived from the word ally – someone who advocates for and supports members of a community other than their own – the celebration honors those who reach across their differences to achieve mutual respect and inclusion. This year’s list of events will be highlighted by a screening of the documentary “Fagbug,” followed by a discussion with creator Erin Davies on Tuesday, April 16 from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the J. Willard Marriott Library Plaza.

New York City’s Grand Central Terminal opened, the nation’s first coast-to-coast highway was completed, the New York Armory Show introduced Picasso, Matisse, Duchamp to the public, and although the population of Salt Lake County was not yet 150,000, the University of Utah’s School of Music started its first program of piano instruction.

Artists in Residence Explore Spanish and North African Music and Dance

The University of Utah’s Tanner Humanities Center and College of Fine Arts are proud to welcome the musical ensemble Al-Andalus as part of the Tanner Center’s Artists in Residence program. Al-Andalus will give a performance featuring Spanish and North African music and dance on Thursday, April 18 at Noon in Libby Gardner Hall, 1375 Presidents Circle. This event is free and open to the public, with no tickets required for admission. The concert is co-sponsored by Nadeya Al-Jabri, the University of Utah’s Middle East Center and the MUSE Project.

New Graduate Degree at the U

The Utah Board of Regents today approved a master’s degree in Entertainment Arts and Engineering (EAE) at the University of Utah. EAE is an interdisciplinary program between the U’s Colleges of Fine Arts and Engineering, and will provide the first advanced degree for the discipline in the state. Utah’s first master’s degree in videogames coincides with the EAE program being ranked the number one undergraduate and number two graduate game degrees in the nation
