Mysteries of the Subconscious Unveiled

The Natural History Museum of Utah will present best-selling author and neuroscientist David Eagleman on Thursday, March 21 at 7:00 p.m. at the University of Utah’s Kingsbury Hall. As keynote speaker for the lecture series, “Nature of Things 2013: The Science of Being Human,” Eagleman will explore how behaviors we think are generated by our conscious minds are driven by rival systems in our subconscious brains.

Prescott Muir to Remain Chair of the School of Architecture

Interim Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs Michael Hardman announced today that Prescott Muir, chair of the School of Architecture, has agreed to remain as chair, with the support of Brenda Case Scheer, dean of the College of Architecture + Planning. “I am pleased that we can come to an understanding,” Professor Muir said. “Now is the time to move forward in a constructive way that builds on a foundation of strong and nationally recognized academic programs within the School and College.”

Best-selling author and Harvard Professor Michael Sandel will give the 2013 Tanner Lecture on Human Values, sponsored by the University of Utah Tanner Humanities Center. Sandel’s lecture, titled “Casino Capitalism: Gambling, Investing and the Ethics of Speculation,” will be held on Wednesday, Feb. 27 at 7:00 p.m. in Kingsbury Hall, 1395 E. Presidents Circle.

Lewis Carroll’s Children’s Classics Acquired by Marriott Library

First editions of Lewis Carroll’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, published in 1865, and his subsequent work Through the Looking Glass and What Alice Found There, published in1872, have been donated to the J. Willard Marriott Library’s Rare Books Division, Special Collections at the University of Utah. The anonymous donation was facilitated by a rare book dealer based in Los Angeles, California. The value of the two books is estimated at $30,000.
