Is Self-Fumigation for the Birds?

When University of Utah biologists set out cotton balls treated with a mild pesticide, wild finches in the Galapagos Islands used the cotton to help build their nests, killing parasitic fly maggots to protect baby birds. The researchers say the self-fumigation method may help endangered birds and even some mammals.

Randall J. Olson Receives 2014 Rosenblatt Prize

Randall J. Olson, M.D., professor and chair of ophthalmology and visual sciences and CEO of the John A. Moran Eye Center at the University of Utah, was honored at today’s commencement ceremonies with the Rosenblatt Prize for Excellence, the U’s most prestigious award. The $40,000 gift is presented annually to a faculty member who displays excellence in teaching, research and administrative efforts.

Utahns Strongly Support State Initiatives Aimed at Improving Public Education, Split on Potential Funding Efforts

Results from a recent Dan Jones & Associates and David Eccles School of Business statewide poll indicate 89 percent of Utahns believe the state’s current and future economic performance is directly related to a strong public education system. The results show 98 percent of democrats believe the public education system is directly related to economic progress, compared to 85 percent of republicans and 89 percent of independent voters.

2014 Truman Scholarship Awarded to U Student for 7th Time

Secretary Madeleine K. Albright, President of the Harry S. Truman Scholarship Foundation, announced the University of Utah’s Tianna Tu as one of 59 students selected as a 2014 Truman Scholar. Tu was chosen from an original pool of 655 applicants from 294 colleges and universities across the United States. The University of Utah is the only school to have produced a Truman Scholar in seven of the last eight years.

U Announces Distinguished Innovation and Impact Award

The University of Utah announced the winners of the fourth annual Distinguished Innovation and Impact Award, which recognizes faculty who create products and initiatives with potential to make an impact and improve lives. The winners are Glenn D. Prestwich, a presidential professor of medicinal chemistry, and V. Kim Martinez, a professor of drawing and painting. Both will be honored at commencement, May 1.

University of Utah to Graduate 7,947 Students on May 1

General commencement ceremonies at the University of Utah will be held on Thursday, May 1 at 6:30 p.m. in the Jon M. Huntsman Center. Scheduling the event in the evening continues a tradition begun in 2013 to make the ceremonies more readily accessible to students and their families. Commencement is free and open to the public; no tickets are required.

University of Utah’s New Phevor Software Identifies Disease-Causing Gene Mutations in Three Undiagnosed Children

A computational tool developed at the University of Utah (U of U) has successfully identified diseases with unknown gene mutations in three separate cases, U of U researchers and their colleagues report in a new study in The American Journal of Human Genetics. The software, Phevor (Phenotype Driven Variant Ontological Re-ranking tool), identifies undiagnosed illnesses and unknown gene mutations by analyzing the exomes, or areas of DNA where proteins that code for genes are made, in individual patients and small families.
