University of Utah Green Power Purchases Propels Pac-12 to EPA Top Ranking

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency is recognizing the University of Utah for its commitment to environmental stewardship. The U ranks third in the nation in a new listing of colleges and universities participating in the EPA’s Green Power Challenge. The university earned this ranking by increasing green power use by 15 percent in 2011 and purchasing more than 98 million kilowatt hours (kWh) of green power, 36 percent of its total power use.

LGBT Ally Week Kicks-off with Screening of Film “Bullied” about Activist Jamie Nabozny

Jamie Nabozny will offer the keynote address at the University of Utah on Wednesday, April 18 at 12:00 p.m. in the Saltair Room of the Olpin Student Union building and the speech will open with a screening of “Bullied,” a documentary produced by the Southern Poverty Law Center which chronicles Nabozny’s story. The Ally Awareness Week celebration runs April 16 through 20, 2012.

Utahn Mickey Ibarra Recognized for Public Service, Leadership to Latino Community

On the evening of Monday, March 26, 2012 Utah native Mickey Ibarra was honored at the Utah Leaders Reception Honoring Mickey Ibarra. Salt Lake City Mayor Ralph Becker; former Mayor Rocky Anderson and Lane Beattie, President and CEO of the Salt Lake City Chamber of Commerce (and former Utah Senate President) recognized the contributions of The Honorable Mickey Ibarra, former Assistant to the President and Director of Intergovernmental Affairs for The White House during the Clinton administration (1997 – 2001). During this time Ibarra served as the President’s liaison to the nation’s mayors and governors.

Salt Lake Community College (SLCC) President Cynthia Bioteau will offer the keynote address at the 2012 University of Utah Women’s Week celebration. This year’s theme, “Powerful Beyond Measure: Women, Work, and Education” will honor the achievements women have made professionally and the importance of education in those achievements. Bioteau will speak on Wednesday, March 21 at noon in the Olpin Student Union Ballroom. All Women’s Week events are free and open to the public unless otherwise noted.

New U President Takes Office

Utah’s flagship university officially welcomes a new President this Monday, March 12, 2012. David W. Pershing, distinguished professor of chemical engineering, was selected by the State Board of Regents as the 15th President of the University of Utah and succeeds Michael K. Young. Dr. Lorris Betz, who retired in 2010 as senior vice president for health sciences and CEO of University of Utah Health Care, has served as interim president since Young’s departure last May.
