U of U Honor Student Named One of Five National 2002 Swearer Humanitarian Award Recipients

Several weeks ago Ashley DiAna was named one of nine University of Utah Bennion Center Service-Learning Scholars. Last Friday the 23-year-old political science student marched in the University of Utah’s commencement exercises. Later that day DiAna, a University Honor’s Program graduate, learned she has been selected as one of five students to receive the prestigious 2002 Howard R. Swearer Student Humanitarian Award. The honor is given by Campus Compact, a national coalition of college and university presidents committed to the civic purposes of higher education.

Long-time Professor/Researcher R. Thayne Robson dies

Beloved and respected business researcher and professor R. Thayne Robson died this morning, May 13. Robson’s long and distinguished tenure as the Director of the Bureau of Business and Economic Research at the University of Utah dates back to the early 1970’s. Over the course of his career, he served as an advisor to the President of the United States, a trusted expert to Utah’s government and business leaders, and as a professor to multiple generations of Utah students. Considered the business development expert in Utah, he conducted more than 40 interviews on the subject during the 2002 Olympic Winter Games alone.

U of U Honorary Degree Recipients Approved by Trustees

Today, the University of Utah Board of Trustees approved honorary degrees for five outstanding individuals, including an honorary degree of Doctor of Humanities for Terry Tempest Williams, who is also this year’s commencement speaker. The other four honorary degree recipients include: Afton B. Bradshaw for Doctor of Humane Letters; William H. “Bill” Child for Doctor of Business; Tom C. Korologos for Doctor of Humane Letters; and, E. W. “Al” Thrasher for Doctor of Public Health.

U of U Event Commemorate World AIDS Day

An art show that opened today at the University of Utah includes a painting by Randall Lake that depicts a man, having just died from AIDS, being lifted up to heaven by an angel. Lake’s “Death’s Sweet Release” is part of “Art Positive!”, an exhibit of artwork by people living with HIV/AIDS, which will show through Dec. 17 at the U’s Olpin Union Gallery. (Lake is the only artist in the show that is not HIV positive, but his work was included as the subject matter is relevant to the AIDS epidemic.)

Utah School-Age Population to Increase More Than 50%

Utah’s school-age population (5 – 17 years-old) is expected to increase by 51.7 percent (264,894) by the year 2030, according to a study by the Bureau of Economic and Business Research (BEBR) at the David Eccles School of Business, The University of Utah. The title of the study is, “The Coming Boom in Utah’s School Age and College Age Populations: State and County Scenarios” by T. Ross Reeve, Governor’s Office of Planning and Budget, and Pamela S. Perlich, Bureau of Economic and Business Research. The study was released today.

Class on Finding Financial Aid and Scholarships Offered at U Next Week

Some college students think they are not eligible to receive scholarships and grants-their parents earn too much money, they don’t belong to a minority group or they lack a stellar grade point average (G.P.A.). However, these are widely held misconceptions, according to University of Utah Assistant Librarian Peter Kraus, who teaches a University class on finding scholarships for undergraduate and graduate students. In fact, he says, every year there is money that goes unclaimed.
