Diverse Class of More Than 6,500 Set to Graduate From University on May 2

The University of Utah class of 2002-2003, comprised of a Rhodes Scholar and students from 43 countries, 45 U.S. states and 21 Utah counties, will march to Elgar’s “Pomp and Circumstance” on Friday, May 2 at the Jon M. Huntsman Center. The procession of graduates will start at 8:20 a.m. with the commencement ceremony beginning at 9 a.m. (Guests should plan to be in their seats prior to 8:30 a.m. Tickets are not required.)

Utah Veterans Honored for Heroic, Selfless Defense of Country at Annual Commemoration

When Air Force Pilot Jay Hess was shot down over the Chinese-North Vietnam border 42 years ago, he was taken to the infamous “Hanoi Hilton” prison and never imagined he could survive the horrible starvation and torture at the hands of his captors. Determination and the hope of one day returning to his wife and five kids back home in Utah helped pulled him through. On Wednesday, Nov. 11 at 11:00 a.m. in the Olpin Union Ballroom, Hess and ten other Utah veterans will be honored at the University of Utah’s annual Veterans Day Commemoration. They will be awarded medallions in a full-dress military ceremony prior to being hailed with a cannon salute.

Veterans’ Day Commemoration to Focus on World War II and Korean War Heroes

The University of Utah will honor 11 veterans at a full-dress military ceremony as part of its annual Veterans’ Day commemoration program on Friday, Nov. 11 at 11:00 a.m. in the main ballroom of the Olpin Union Building. The Utah veterans who served our country in World War II, the Korean War and Vietnam will be presented with honorary medallions by University of Utah President Michael K. Young. Nearly 100 cadets and midshipmen from the military science ROTC programs will present the ceremony, which will include a 21-gun cannon salute. The group of 11 honorees was selected from over 50 nominations submitted by Utah citizens.

Final Lecture to Focus on Weapons’ Proliferation and Conflict in the Greater Middle East

Geoffrey Kemp, director of the Regional Strategic Programs at The Nixon Center in Washington, D.C., will be on campus next Tuesday, Apr. 8, to deliver the ninth and final speech in a series of University lectures focusing on the Iraqi-American confrontation. Kemp, a visiting professor at The Paul H. Nitze School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS) of Johns Hopkins University, will present “Powder Keg: Weapons’ Proliferation and Conflict in the Greater Middle East,” from 2 until 3:30 p.m., in the Dumke Auditorium of the Utah Museum of Fine Arts, located next to the David Eccles School of Business. The event, co-sponsored by the Office of the President, the Department of Political Science and the Colleges of Humanities and Social and Behavioral Science, is free and open to the public.
