After the War in Lebanon

The University of Utah Middle East Lecture Series continues with four talks addressing the problems and predicaments facing the Middle East and the United States in the aftermath of the July-August 2006 war in Lebanon. Focusing on the Palestinian-Israeli conflict, U.S. policy in the Middle East, and Syria’s place in the new international environment, the lectures will take place at 3:00 p.m. in the Hinckley Caucus Room 255 Orson Spenser Hall (OSH). The lectures are free and open to the public.

Hiram E. Chodosh Named Dean of S. J. Quinney College of Law

Hiram E. Chodosh has been appointed the new dean of the S.J. Quinney College of Law at the University of Utah. Chodosh comes to the U from the School of Law at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio, where he is the Joseph C. Hostetler – Baker & Hostetler Professor of Law and serves as associate dean for academic affairs. “We are extraordinarily fortunate in hiring Hiram Chodosh. He is an internationally recognized legal scholar and administrator who brings an exceptional breadth and depth of experience to the S.J. Quinney College of Law. His guidance and leadership will be foundational in moving our College of Law into the elite of public universities in America,” said University of Utah President Michael K Young.

U ROTC Cadet Receives Scholarship Honoring General Killed in 9-11 Pentagon Attack

On Monday, University of Utah Army ROTC Cadet Leonard “Lenny” Jensen will receive a $1,500 scholarship established in honor of the highest-ranking official killed in the 9-11 attack on the Pentagon. The Lt. Gen.Timothy J. Maude Memorial Fund Scholarship, the first and only one of its kind to be awarded this year, will be presented to 26-year-old Jensen in Washington, D.C., at noon, at the annual Officership Luncheon, to be held in the new Washington D.C. Convention Center. Gen. Burwell B. Bell III, the commanding general for U.S. Army Europe and 7th Army, and General Maude’s widow, Teri, will present Jensen with the award. The Association of the United States Army (AUSA) is paying for the trip for Jensen and his wife Marianne. They will leave Salt Lake City and travel to Washington on Saturday.

Trio of experts available for perspective on Afghanistan

Three law professors at the University of Utah’s S.J. Quinney College of Law have spent time with Afghan prosecutors in the U.S. and Afghanistan. Each has been instrumental in a project to assist the Afghan government to reconstruct its justice system essentially from the ground up after 30 years of civil war and the demolition of the existing Afghan system.

Medal of Honor Recipient to Receive Diploma

Medal of Honor Recipient Colonel Bernard Francis Fisher, retired USAF, will receive his diploma from the University of Utah 57 years after attending classes at the U as a student. Colonel Fisher was not able to complete his undergraduate degree before receiving his Air Force commission and entering active duty Air Force into the Aviation Program.
