Family Visiting for the Holidays? What’s the Story?

The holidays are when families come together to pass on stories from generation to generation. Now the S.J. Quinney College of Law is making available a forum to anyone who wants to share their tales with a wider audience. Submissions are being sought of brief monologues about family from faculty, staff, students, and community members. These monologues will be performed on the evening of February 28, 2008, as part of a conference on the New Frontiers in Family Law hosted by the College of Law and Gender Studies Program.

U of U to Offer Annual Lectures on Middle East Perspectives on Regional Issues and U.S. Policies

The next speaker in the Middle East lecture series at the University of Utah will be Shahram Chubin, director of studies at the Geneva Center for Security Policy, speaking on Iranian perspectives concerning regional issues and U.S. Policies this Thursday, March 2. The lecture will begin at 3 p.m., in the Hinckley Institute of Politics Caucus room, 255 Orson Spencer Hall (OSH), on the University campus. The lecture series is free and open to the public.

Siciliano Lecture at U to Focus on Effect of Globalization on the World’s Workers

The promise of good jobs for American college graduates will not hold true in the future because of greatly increased competition from other countries, according to Richard B. Freeman, Ascherman Professor of Economics at Harvard University. “Globalization is the first step in the loss of U.S. dominance of the world economy. We will no longer have ‘monopoly’ of the best technologies and jobs, and others will come closer to our living standards. Almost every multinational firm realizes this and they are investing overseas,” he says.

Utes Win Big at National Pistol Championships

The University of Utah Pistol Team scored impressive wins at the National Inter-Collegiate Pistol Championships held last week at Fort Benning, Georgia. Lindsay Daniels, a senior graduating with a double major in international studies and sociology, as well as a minor in Arabic, is the National Champion in the Women’s Air Pistol event. Daniels also finished fourth in the Women’s Sport Pistol event. She is only the second athlete in team history to win an individual national championship in pistol shooting. Lindsay also took third place in the women’s individual aggregate, the first Utah athlete to achieve this honor. Daniels took All-American honors in the Women’s Sport Pistol Event.

U of U Commencement on May 2 to Graduate More Than 7,300

Commencement ceremonies at the University of Utah will be held on Friday, May 2, at 9 a.m. in the Jon M. Huntsman Center. The class of 2008, comprised of 7,331 graduates, will receive degrees that morning. The procession of diverse students, who come from 73 countries, 50 U.S. states and 26 of Utah’s 29 counties, will begin at 8:30 a.m. Guests should plan to be in their seats prior to 8:30 a.m. Tickets are not required.
