Social Justice: More than Good Intentions

On Friday, April 9, 2010, the University of Utah College of Social Work will present the 9th annual Pete Suazo Social Justice Awards, beginning at 3:00 pm in the Community Meeting Room of the Goodwill Humanitarian Building, 395 South 1500 East, Salt Lake City. The awards were created to honor the life of the late Senator Suazo by recognizing the work of those who fully dedicate themselves to the goal of social and economic justice. This year, the prestigious awards will be presented to four individuals and two organizations: Dhiraj Chand, People’s Market, Cathy Martinez, Disability Law Center, Melissa Bird, and May Romo.

U of U David Eccles School of Business Executive MBA Program Surges Ahead in Global Rankings

For the fifth year in a row, the Financial Times of London has ranked the University of Utah’s David Eccles School of Business (DESB) Executive MBA program among the top programs in the world. According to the report, being published in the Oct. 19 issue, the David Eccles School of Business Executive MBA program was ranked 30 in the United States and 77 in the world. Faculty research output was ranked 20 in the U.S.

David Eccles School of Business Welcomes New Dean

Taylor Randall, associate dean of academic affairs at the David Eccles School of Business, will replace Jack Brittain as the dean of the David Eccles School of Business on July 1, 2009. While Randall will not formally become dean until July 1, he will be in the leadership role immediately with Brittain’s support as he makes the transition.

To help sixth-graders envision themselves as future college students, the University of Utah has invited 1,500 students from Title I schools to sample its campus, facilities and courses for one day.

RIVALRY WEEK ROLLS ON WITH PEP RALLY AND FOOD DRIVE

Ute fans will turn up the enthusiasm next week in a huge pre-game pep rally as the football team prepares to play BYU. The celebration will be held on the Marriott Library Plaza, Tuesday, Nov. 20 beginning at 11:30 a.m. One of the highlights of the rally will be the “Rivalry Roll” where students, faculty, and staff compete for big prizes by rolling numbered tennis balls down the hill from the HPER gymnasium complex to the library.

Combating the Loss of 4 Million College Degrees

The Jack Kent Cooke Foundation today awarded a $1 million grant to the University of Utah as part of a $10 million nationwide initiative aimed at significantly increasing college enrollment and graduation among first-generation high school students. Following in the tradition of the AmeriCorps and Teach for America programs, the College Advising Corps initiative will recruit and train University of Utah seniors to work full time as advisers for one to two years following graduation.
