Learn About Middle Eastern People through Film

The Middle East and the people who live there are unfamiliar and hard to understand for the average American. In an attempt to bring a better understanding to this ever more important part of the world, the University of Utah Middle East Center and the Utah Museum of Fine Arts, in collaboration with the Salt Lake City Film Center are sponsoring a series of films from the region. The Middle East through its Films-2007 will be shown at the Utah Museum of Fine Arts, every other Wednesday, 6:00-9:00 p.m. beginning January 31.

U of U Students Get Paid to Simulate Financial Markets

On Wednesday, Sept. 13, and throughout the coming academic year, University of Utah students will have the chance to earn while they learn. Students in the “Introduction to Investments” 3050 course-as well as U student volunteers-will discover how financial markets work by trading real securities within a two- to three-hour time period-and get paid according to their performance. Earnings vary-averaging from $20 to $30 an hour.

U of U Service-Learning Scholars to be Honored for More than 7,000 Hours of Community Service

Eighteen University of Utah students who completed 400 hours of community service each will be honored at the U’s commencement ceremonies on May 5, at 9 a.m., in the Jon M. Huntsman Center. The U”s Bennion Community Service Center Service-Learning scholars were recently recognized for also completing 10 credit hours of service-learning classes and a major integrative service project (ISP) that combines academics with concentrated community work. Next week, the Service-Learning program, now in its fourteenth year, will graduate 18 students as compared to last year’s 12.

Past or Present? Racism & Oppression in the United States” is the theme for the 2006 Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration at the University of Utah. Festivities begin with the opening of an art exhibit by students EJ Curry and Carlos Perez and the launch of “Sharing the Gift of Literacy” a community service project. New English and Bilingual dictionaries as well as school supplies may be donated to benefit the West High Family Literacy Center.

U of U Researcher Reports Latino Immigrants’ Experiences in Utah to be Mixed

When Utah was settled, 90 percent of its immigrants were Anglo-Europeans and new converts to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. By the year 2000, 90 percent of immigrants coming into the Beehive State were Latinos and Catholic. Because of this dramatic shift, Georgetown University’s Institute for the Study of International Migration now classifies Utah as one of the new “gateway” states for those leaving other countries to enter the United States to live.

Inauguration Celebrations at U to Offer Free Symposia and Cultural Events to Public

A panoply of University of Utah events will take place the week prior and leading up to the inauguration of Michael K. Young as the University’s 14th president on Friday, April 15th, at 11 a.m., in Kingsbury Hall, located at 1395 E. Presidents Circle (180 S.) on the University of Utah campus. The event is free and open to the public on a first come, first served basis. A processional ticket is required for those participating in the academic procession, which will commence at the Park Building, at 10:45 a.m., and travel to Kingsbury Hall. Following the ceremony a reception will be held, weather permitting, on the Kingsbury Hall Plaza. In case of inclement weather, the reception will be held in the Gardner Hall atrium.

Humanities Documentary Studies Grant Program

The College of Humanities is pleased to announce the inaugural funding round for the Documentary Studies Seed Grant program. This program is designed to foster creative collaboration, both within the college and throughout the University campus. Additionally, the program allows for broad collaboration with independent documentary professionals outside the University community.
