Wood named Interim Director of BEBR

James Wood, Senior Economist at the Bureau of Economic and Business Research (BEBR), will serve as the Interim Director of the office at the David Eccles School of Business at the University of Utah. Wood was appointed to this position this week, following the death of R. Thayne Robson, long-time Director of BEBR in May. Wood will serve as Interim Director throughout a nationwide search, set to begin in September. He estimates the search may take up to a year. Following the appointment of a new Director, Wood will serve as Associate Director of BEBR.

Three nationally acclaimed Black authors – G. Winston James, Martha Southgate and Mat Johnson–will be presented by the University of Utah in a series of lectures and readings titled, “Writers Like Us: Contemporary African American Writers.” The series will run March 29 through April 12. Utah Job Market Still Seeks College Grads

Employers will hire 22 percent fewer college graduates nationwide this year, according to an annual survey conducted by the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE). However, employers recruiting at the University of Utah this spring indicate they are still hiring. Tight budget restrictions mean fewer job openings than last year, but new job postings continue to come into the U’s Career Services Office.

Pep Rally and Food Drive Highlight Rivalry Week

Ute fans are encouraged to “red up” the rivalry this week at a huge pep rally as the football team prepares to play BYU. The Rivalry Week celebration will be held on the Marriott Library Plaza, Monday, Nov. 17 beginning at noon. University President Michael K. Young will address the crowd. Ute coaches, players, and cheerleaders will also speak and lead the crowd in cheers.

U of U Honorary Degree Recipients and Commencement Speaker Announced

Today, The University of Utah Board of Trustees approved honorary doctoral degrees for five individuals, which will be presented at this year’s commencement ceremonies on Friday, May 2, 2008, in the Jon M. Huntsman Center. Given to individuals who merit special recognition for service or achievement, the awards will be presented to Claudia Skaggs Luttrell for Doctor of Humane Letters, Kent H. Murdock for Doctor of Humanities, David G. Neeleman for Doctor of Business, Dinesh C. Patel for Doctor of Business and to this year’s commencement speaker, Mario R. Capecchi, for Doctor of Science.
