Pep Rally and Food Drive Highlight Rivalry Week

Nov. 12, 2008 – Ute fans are encouraged to “red up” the rivalry this week at a huge pep rally as the football team prepares to play BYU. The Rivalry Week celebration will be held on the Marriott Library Plaza, Monday, Nov. 17 beginning at noon. University President Michael K. Young will address the crowd. Ute coaches, players, and cheerleaders will also speak and lead the crowd in cheers.

One of the highlights of the rally will be the “Rivalry Roll” where students, faculty, and staff compete for big prizes by rolling numbered tennis balls down the hill to the library. Donations will be accepted for each roll to benefit the annual Utah/BYU Food Drive which goes on throughout the month of November. The first-place student winner of the Rivalry Roll will receive half off a semester’s tuition. The first place prize for non-students is a $100 gift card for the University Campus Store.

Other activities at the pep rally include performances by the Ute Marching Band, cheerleaders, and Crimson Line, as well as a t-shirt design tent. Revelers will be provided with free lunch, Ute cheering gear, and prizes from the University of Utah Credit Union.

An important part of Rivalry Week is always the annual Utah vs. BYU Food Drive contest. Anyone can participate and help out those less fortunate by donating cans of food or cash at participating area locations. Below is a list of the different ways Utah fans can beat the Cougars in the fight against hunger:

  • Donate cans and other nonperishable food items to the Alumni House at 155 S. Central Campus Drive or to other Food Drive pick-up sites around campus.

  • Make a monetary donation online at www.alumni.utah.edu or in person at the Alumni House.

  • At the University Campus Store or any Deseret First Credit Union, donate $1 and choose a Utah “U” for the branch to display.

  • Bring donations (cash or check) to the Utah vs. BYU game on Saturday, November 22.
