UMFA Premieres Rare Photographs of Frida Kahlo

A suite of portraits of legendary artist Frida Kahlo (1907-1954) taken by her lover and famed photographer Nickolas Muray (1895-1965) are on exclusive view at the Utah Museum of Fine Arts (UMFA) from October 7, 2005 through May 14, 2006. Many of the works are on public display for the first time in the United States after a brief showing in Europe. The exhibition, “Her spirit is stranger than the angels: Frida Kahlo through the Lens of Nickolas Muray,” provides intimate insight into the lives of these two artists with 24 photographs, excerpts from letters between Kahlo and Muray, and select pre-Columbian objects from the UMFA’s collection similar to those seen with Kahlo in her portraits.

Trustees Approve Honorary Degree Recipients and Commencement Speaker

Today, the University of Utah Board of Trustees approved honorary doctoral degrees for six individuals, which will be presented at this year’s commencement ceremonies on Friday, May 6, 2005, in the Jon M. Huntsman Center. The degrees, awarded to individuals who merit special recognition for service or achievement, will be presented to Robert F. Bennett for Doctor of Laws; Edwin E. Catmull for Doctor of Engineering; Katherine W. Dumke for Doctor of Humane Letters; C.A. “Arnie” Ferrin for Doctor of Humane Letters; Marta Sutton Weeks for Doctor of Humane Letters; and to this year’s commencement speaker, The Most Reverend George H. Niederauer, for Doctor of Humane Letters.

Siciliano Lecture at U to Focus on Effect of Globalization on the World’s Workers

The promise of good jobs for American college graduates will not hold true in the future because of greatly increased competition from other countries, according to Richard B. Freeman, Ascherman Professor of Economics at Harvard University. “Globalization is the first step in the loss of U.S. dominance of the world economy. We will no longer have ‘monopoly’ of the best technologies and jobs, and others will come closer to our living standards. Almost every multinational firm realizes this and they are investing overseas,” he says.

University of Utah Homecoming Goes “Crazy for U”

Fraternities and sororities will compete with signs, slogans and displays which show-off their school spirit. The week’s activities all lead up to the big game at 5 p.m. Sat., October 11 when the Utes take on San Diego State.

The hero of the next movie you watch may have started in video games. On Friday, April 30, University of Utah students will screen short animated films they made with 3-D video game production software for a class on “machinima,” or machine cinema.

U OF U COMMENCEMENT ON MAY 8 TO GRADUATE MORE THAN 7,100

April 27, 2009 — Commencement ceremonies at the University of Utah will be held on Friday, May 8, at 9 a.m. in the Jon M. Huntsman Center. The class of 2009, comprised of 7,132 graduates, will receive degrees that morning. The procession of diverse students, who come from 76 countries, 50 U.S. states and 28 of Utah’s 29 counties, will begin at 8:20 a.m. Guests should plan to be in their seats prior to 8:20 a.m. Tickets are not required.

College of Fine Arts Turns 60

You only turn 60 once and the College of Fine Arts at the University of Utah is doing it in grand style. Honoring a rich tradition in the arts begun in 1888, the College of Fine Arts was founded in 1948 to encompass the departments of art and art history, ballet, film, modern dance, theatre and the School of Music. The 60th anniversary celebrates each of these art forms with a series of speakers, exhibits and performances taking place March 7-13.
