Cosmic Ray Observatory Planned

The University of Utah and a group of Japanese and U.S. universities plan to build a $17 million to $18 million cosmic ray observatory named the Telescope Array in central Utah’s Millard County. It will try to determine the mysterious source of the most energetic particles in the universe.

U of U Chicano Scholarship Applications Due January 15th

This year the University of Utah will present at least ten Chicano Scholarship Awards of $1,000 each to new freshman, transfer and current University undergraduate and graduate students. Scholarships of lesser value will be awarded as well. The ten scholarships are awarded to high school seniors and other college students who promote the cultural pride and advancement of the Chicano/Latino community. Recipients are selected on the basis of family background, life challenges, scholastic effort, involvement in the Chicano/Latino community and financial need.

U of U Strike Gold in California

The University of Utah’s magazine, Continuum, took home gold this past week at the annual CASE District VII Awards Gala and Conference in Los Angeles. Continuum earned top honors in a category that received 30 entries throughout a five-state region, the most submitted in any category for the 2003 CASE District VII Excellence Awards. On hand to accept the gold award for magazine excellence was editor Theresa Desmond, who also accepted the magazine’s silver medal for excellence in magazine writing.

Dr. Lorris Betz Appointed Interim President of University of Utah

In a meeting of the University of Utah Board of Trustees Monday, State Board of Regents Chair Nolan E. Karras announced that Dr. Lorris Betz has been appointed as Interim President of the University of Utah, effective January 1, 2004. Dr. Betz, currently the Senior Vice President for Health Sciences, Dean of the School of Medicine, and CEO of the University of Utah Health System, will serve as Interim President until a new President is appointed later in 2004. “Dr. Betz is a capable administrator, and we are confident that with his leadership the University will continue to function very effectively while we continue the search for a new President,” stated Chair Karras. “We are grateful that he is willing to accept the assignment to serve in the important role of Interim President.”
