Michael K. Young Named New President of University of Utah

The State Board of Regents Thursday selected Michael K. Young as the 14th President of the University of Utah. Young, 54, is currently the Dean of the George Washington University Law School in Washington, D.C. President Young will assume his duties this summer. He will succeed J. Bernard Machen, who left January 1 to accept the Presidency of the University of Florida, and Dr. Lorris Betz who has served as Interim President. Dr. Betz will resume his previous roles as Senior Vice President for Health Sciences, Dean of the School of Medicine and Chief Executive Officer of the University of Utah Health System.

Eleven Chicano Scholars to be Honored at the U of U on May 14

In 1977, third-year University of Utah law student Andrew A. Valdez was married, had a child and was working full-time-the graveyard shift at the Salt Lake County Jail-to make ends meet. Although he had taken out student loans, he didn’t have enough money to pay tuition for his last semester of law school. That spring Valdez, a student activist, received a University Chicano Scholarship Award-about $500 at the time, which allowed him to finish law school and “put money down on the Bar exam.” Valdez is now a Third District Juvenile Court Judge.

U’s Presidents Circle to Become a Cinco de Mayo Fiesta

Sixty-seven piñatas, a live Mariachi band and traditional Mexican desserts will transform the University of Utah’s Presidents Circle into “Little Mexico” for a Cinco de Mayo fiesta. More than 1,700 third- and fourth-graders from Title I schools across the Salt Lake Valley will take part in the May 4 party, hosted by Kingsbury Hall, located at 1395 E. Presidents Circle, on the University campus, from 10:30 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. Before the fiesta, students will attend a free performance by Ballet Folklorico “Quetzalli” de Veracruz, a Hispanic dance company from Veracruz, Mexico. At 11:15 a.m. the students will enjoy their own sack lunches on the grassy area of Presidents Circle, followed by the festivities.

Small Machines Make for Big Competition

Getting ready for the MESA National Event is no small challenge! MESA USA’s National Engineering Design Competition Multi-Purpose Vehicle (MPV) Challenge will be held Saturday, April 24 at Cottonwood High School (5715 S 1300 E) beginning at 10 a.m. The competition involves mousetrap-powered cars built by ten teams from four Utah high schools and five junior high schools.

Class of 2003-2004 Set to Graduate From U of U on May 7

The University of Utah’s class of 2003-2004, comprised of 7,404 graduates, will receive their degrees at commencement ceremonies on Friday, May 7, at the Jon M. Huntsman Center. The procession of diverse graduates, who come from 60 countries, 50 U.S. states and 26 Utah counties, will begin at 8:20 a.m., with the commencement ceremony beginning at 9 a.m. (Guests should plan to be in their seats prior to 8:30 a.m. Tickets are not required.)

Robots to the Rescue

Robots built by third-year mechanical engineering students at the University of Utah will rescue Beanie Babies from a dangerous obstacle course. Junior high school students will catapult stuffed BYU cougars across a large ballroom. Contraptions built by first-year mechanical engineering students will attempt to carry raw eggs in the “Evil EGGnievel Competition.” And university seniors will display their projects.
