Robots to Portray ‘Harry Potter’

Robots will fill the role of fictional wizard Harry Potter and navigate a maze. Other devices named “Little Egg Riding Hoods” will try to carry raw eggs intact over a river and through the woods to grandma’s house. College seniors will demonstrate their inventions. And stuffed cougars – the mascot of University of Utah rival Brigham Young University – again will be hurled through the air.

More than 7,000 Set to Graduate from U of U on May 6

Commencement ceremonies at the University of Utah will be held on Friday, May 6, at 9 a.m., in the Jon M. Huntsman Center. The class of 2005, comprised of 7,414 graduates, will receive their degrees that morning. The procession of diverse students, who come from 68 countries, 50 U.S. states and 26 of Utah’s 29 counties, will begin at 8:20 a.m. Guests should plan to be in their seats prior to 8:30 a.m. Tickets are not required

Utah Educator Honored by Peers

The Society of Women Engineers (SWE) today announced Dr. JoAnn S. Lighty, professor of Chemical Engineering and former associate dean for academic affairs in the College of Engineering at the University of Utah, recipient of the 2004 SWE Distinguished Engineering Educator Award. In issuing the honor, the society cited Lighty’s dedication to SWE’s goals and mission and her willingness to serve on many committees that address issues of women in engineering.

Diverse Class of More Than 6,500 Set to Graduate From University on May 2

The University of Utah class of 2002-2003, comprised of a Rhodes Scholar and students from 43 countries, 45 U.S. states and 21 Utah counties, will march to Elgar’s “Pomp and Circumstance” on Friday, May 2 at the Jon M. Huntsman Center. The procession of graduates will start at 8:20 a.m. with the commencement ceremony beginning at 9 a.m. (Guests should plan to be in their seats prior to 8:30 a.m. Tickets are not required.)

U of U Enters Trashy Competition

The University of Utah’s office of sustainability, along with housing and residential education, is encouraging students to sort through their trash to find things that they had not realized could be recycled. Between 4 to 7 p.m. on Tuesday Feb. 8, students living on campus will be asked to head to their rooms and determine how much of their weekly waste can be recycled with systems in already in place. Organizers also hope this “trash day” will help them identify new programs needed to help improve campus recycling.

Robot Climbs Walls

Wielding two claws, a motor and a tail that swings like a grandfather clock’s pendulum, a small robot named ROCR (“rocker”) scrambles up a carpeted, 8-foot wall in just over 15 seconds – the first such robot designed to climb efficiently and move like human rock climbers or apes swinging through trees.
