Work Begins on Historic Block U Facelift

Renovation of the historic Block U on the hill above the campus of the University of Utah is getting underway today with the general contractor, Layton Construction Company (Sandy, UT), beginning work on a temporary dirt access road. This is the first step in the renovation process that is expected to be completed by the end of September. The temporary access road is needed to safely transport construction materials, equipment, and personnel to the base of the Block U. The road will be installed directly below the block U off of New Bedford Drive and include one switchback to allow for a less severe grade up the steep slope. Once the project is completed, the road will be returned to its original condition and reseeded.

Former University of Utah Administrator R.J. Snow Dies

R.J. (Reuben Joseph) Snow, beloved former University of Utah administrator, died suddenly Tuesday, June 6, 2006, as a result of a car accident. During his 12 years at the University, from 1973 until 1985, Snow made meaningful and far-reaching contributions, both as a faculty member and as an administrator. He joined the U* as a staff assistant to University President David P. Gardner. He was an associate professor of political science, vice president for University Relations (and later Student and University Relations) and the director of the U’s Hinckley Institute of Politics, positions in which he served and excelled simultaneously.

New research shows that global climate processes are affecting southern right whales (Eubalaena australis) in the South Atlantic. A thirty-year study by an international team of scientists found a strong relationship between breeding success of whales in the South Atlantic and El Nino in the western Pacific. The results are published this week in the online journal Biology Letters.

Utah Students to be Honored with Chicano Scholarship May 13 at the U of U

This year’s Chicano Scholarship committee will honor 17 Utah students with $1,000 scholarships. The scholarship recipients will receive their awards at the 30th Annual Chicano Scholarship Awards banquet May 13 at the University of Utah Union Ballroom. Social hour begins at 6 p.m., followed by dinner at 7 p.m., speakers and the awards ceremony.
