LGBT 2013 Ally Awareness Week Features Hate Crime Victim Erin Davies

The theme for this year’s Ally Awareness Week at the University of Utah (the U) will be “Stand. Speak. Act.” Organized annually by the LGBT Resource Center, activities will take place Monday, April 15 through Friday, April 19. Derived from the word ally – someone who advocates for and supports members of a community other than their own – the celebration honors those who reach across their differences to achieve mutual respect and inclusion. This year’s list of events will be highlighted by a screening of the documentary “Fagbug,” followed by a discussion with creator Erin Davies on Tuesday, April 16 from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the J. Willard Marriott Library Plaza.

University of Utah Names Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs

Ruth V. Watkins will bring her extensive experience as an educator and administrator to the University of Utah as the new senior vice president for academic affairs. Currently the dean for the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences at the University of Illinois and professor of speech and hearing science, psychology and linguistics, Watkins was selected after a national search. David Pershing held the position for 14 years before becoming president in 2012.

Days of Remembrance Features Peter Black, Senior Historian of the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum

The University of Utah commemorates Days of Remembrance with activities from April 10-11. The theme for this year is “70 Years Later: Remembering the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising” and features a keynote address by Peter Black, Senior Historian at the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum. Black will speak on Thursday, April 11 from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at the U’s Carol Tanner Irish Humanitarian Building Lecture Hall, room 109. Prior to the keynote, there will be a candlelight vigil at 6:30 p.m. in the same building on the patio and labyrinth.

University Neighborhood Partners Opens the New Hartland Partnership Center

University Neighborhood Partners (UNP), a department of the University of Utah (the U), celebrates the grand opening of the new 10,000 square foot Hartland Partnership Center on Tuesday, April 16 at 3:00 p.m. followed by an open house reception. Located at 1578 West 1700 South, UNP’s Hartland Partnership Center brings together University faculty and students, non-profit organizations and residents of west Salt Lake City to address economic, linguistic and social barriers.

Review of U Swim Program Underway

President David Pershing announced today that the independent review examining allegations made against the U’s swim program has commenced. The members of the review team will report their findings directly to a subcommittee of the University’s Board of Trustees headed by Vice Chair Michele Mattsson.

Women’s Week 2013 Celebration Features Keynote Address by Edith Lawrence of the Award Winning Young Women Leaders Program

The theme for this year’s celebration is “Learning through Giving: Mentoring Young Women” Featuring a keynote address by University of Virginia Curry School of Education Professor Edith Lawrence. Her address will take place Thursday, March 28 from noon to1:00 p.m. at the U’s student Oplin Union building, Saltair Room.
