U of U AMERICAN INDIAN TEACHER TRAINING PROGRAM RECEIVES $2 M IN GRANT MONIES

It was announced today that the University of Utah’s American Indian Teacher Training Program (AITTP) has been awarded two grants from the U.S. Department of Education, Office of Indian Education totaling more than $2 million over four years. Grant funds will be used to continue the university’s successful teacher preparation program within the College of Education. One grant, totaling $1,062,385, will prepare teacher candidates in the areas of math and science. The other grant, a total of $983,704, will enable teacher aides to train to become certified teachers. Both grants focus on preparing American Indian or Alaska Native students to become teachers. AITTP staff and the Department of Teaching and Learning in the College of Education are now actively recruiting students for the 2007 – 2008 school year.

President Young to Speak at Hartland Head Start Ribbon Cutting Ceremony

University of Utah President Michael Young is scheduled to offer congratulatory remarks during a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Tuesday, February 13, 2007 celebrating the opening of a new Head Start Center located at the Hartland Apartment Complex, a primary resettlement site for refugee agencies in Salt Lake. The ceremony, held from 4:00 pm to 5:00pm, will include Hartland Head Start families and residents, west Salt Lake community leaders, and other University members.

Homecoming Week at the University of Utah promises to be more exciting than ever this year, thanks to a beefed-up pep rally/concert and a new 18-hole golf tournament. This year’s Homecoming football game features the University of Utah versus Boise State at 1 p.m. in Rice-Eccles Stadium. First Recipient of Lori Kay Soares Hacking Scholarship to Graduate

The first recipient of the Lori Kay Soares Hacking Memorial Scholarship will graduate this Friday at the commencement ceremonies of the David Eccles School of Business scheduled for 4:15 p.m. in the Jon M. Huntsman Center. In her application, scholarship recipient Linda Hines described herself as a student who refused to give up on her education, despite hardships in life. “Against all odds, I have overcome, I am a fighter, I am a believer,” wrote Hines.

New Teachers Trained at the U Achieve Nearly-Perfect Pass Rate on State-Mandated Test

The 2005 graduates of the University of Utah’s College of Education teacher education program performed extremely well as a class on the newly state-mandated PRAXIS PLT II Principles of Learning and Teaching exam. One hundred percent of University of Utah early childhood teachers, 98 percent of elementary teachers and 98 percent of secondary teachers passed the test at the required state level the first time they took the examination.
