Homecoming 2008: Better Off Red!

The spectrum of activities at this year’s Homecoming Week is broader than ever with events ranging from humanitarian efforts to stimulating political discussion to festive fund-raising and athletics for the whole family. Celebrations kick off September 20 with the Legacy of Lowell Annual Service Day and culminate September 27 with the Utah vs. Weber State football game at 6 p.m. in Rice-Eccles Stadium. U of U Commencement on May 2 to Graduate More Than 7,300

Commencement ceremonies at the University of Utah will be held on Friday, May 2, at 9 a.m. in the Jon M. Huntsman Center. The class of 2008, comprised of 7,331 graduates, will receive degrees that morning. The procession of diverse students, who come from 73 countries, 50 U.S. states and 26 of Utah’s 29 counties, will begin at 8:30 a.m. Guests should plan to be in their seats prior to 8:30 a.m. Tickets are not required.

Earth Day Planting and Celebration

Research indicates that one acre of forest absorbs six tons of carbon dioxide and puts out four tons of oxygen, which is enough to meet the annual oxygen needs of 18 people. This Saturday, April 21, Bend-in-the-River welcomes Earth Day with a planting and celebration. The event will take place from 8:30 a.m. to noon at Bend-in-the-River, 1030 West Fremont Avenue (1100 South) and will include a light breakfast, planting, children’s activities sponsored by REI, lunch and presentation of community partner awards. The celebration is free and open to the public.

Cybersafe Your Teens

“Cybersafe Your Teens,” a one-hour discussion forum hosted by Doug Fabrizio, will air Feb. 26 at 9 p.m. on KUED-Channel 7. It will explore practical ways parents can keep their children safe on the Internet. The program will be repeated March 1 at 8 p.m. and again March 3 at 7 p.m. on KUEN Channel 9.

David Korten to Speak at U Oct. 23rd

David Korten, author of the bestseller “When Corporations Rule the World” and “The Great Turning: From Empire to Earth Community,” will speak at the U on Monday, Oct. 23, from 1:30 until 3 p.m., in the old University’s Fine Arts Auditorium, 370 S. 1530 E., adjacent to the Arts and Architecture Building. The event is free and open to the public.

U Alumni Association Board Welcomes Six New Members

Six community leaders and University of Utah graduates have been appointed to serve a three-year term on the U’s Alumni Association Board of Directors (UUAA). The new board members will join the current board of 24 to oversee myriad activities associated with four affiliated boards – the Beehive Honor Society, Emeritus Alumni, Young Alumni, and Student Alumni.
