U Announces New Director of Marriott Library

The University of Utah has selected Joyce Ogburn as its new Director of the J. Willard Marriott Library. Ogburn comes to Utah from the University of Washington where she was Associate Director of the Libraries, Resources and Collection Management Services (RCMS). She takes over for Sarah Michalak who left to become university librarian and associate provost for university libraries at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Faculty, Staff, and Students Mourn Loss of Distinguished Professor

Barry Cushing, a distinguished professor in the School of Accounting and Information Systems, passed away Tuesday morning after a long battle with cancer. He was 59. Professor Cushing is survived by his wife of 38 years, Cherry Lee Barker, and their four children, Dennis, Becky, Christy and Andy. He received a B.A. degree in 1966 (with high honor) and his Ph. D. in Accounting in March of 1969, both from Michigan State University.

U of U Alumni Association to Commemorate Founders Day

The University of Utah Alumni Association will celebrate Founders Day, which commemorates the founding of the University of Utah in 1850, next Wednesday, Feb. 25. A reception will be held in the Little American Hotel Ballroom at 6:30 p.m., with dinner beginning at 7:15 p.m. The Little America Hotel is located at 500 S. Main Street. U’s Wellness Week Activities Range From Fair to Mile Walk to Alcohol-Free Halloween Party

University of Utah students, faculty, staff and the greater community can learn more about health and wellness during the U’s Wellness Week, Oct. 28 through 31. The 13th Annual Wellness Fair, traditionally a highlight of the week because of the giveaways and free health information, will be held on Wednesday, Oct. 29th, from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m., in the U’s Olpin Union Ballroom. Last year more than 2,000 people attended the mid-week event.

U of U Honorary Degree Recipients Announced

Today, The University of Utah Board of Trustees approved honorary doctoral degrees for five individuals, which will be presented at this year’s commencement ceremonies on Friday, May 7, 2010, in the Jon M. Huntsman Center. Given to individuals who merit special recognition for service or achievement, the awards will be presented to Sue D. Christensen for Doctor of Humane Letters, E. Gordon Gee for Doctor of Laws, Shane Robison for Doctor of Engineering, W. Dean Singleton for Doctor of Business and to this year’s commencement speaker, Jon M. Huntsman, Jr. for Doctor of Humane Letters.
