U Alumni Association Honors Steve Smith, Terese Pratt and Jill Briggs at Spring Awards Banquet

The University of Utah Alumni Association and the Young Alumni Board will host the annual Spring Awards Banquet tonight at Rice-Eccles Stadium, beginning at 6:30 p.m. The evening is dedicated to honoring NFL football star and former U student Steve Smith, director of the University College’s Transfer Center Terese Pratt, and former Young Alumni Board vice president Jill Briggs.

U Honors State’s Social Justice Advocates

On Wednesday, April 10, the University of Utah College of Social Work will celebrate the 12th year of the Pete Suazo Social Justice Awards by acknowledging three individuals and three organizations as advocates and activists for social and economic justice: Yuderka Lewis, the National Alliance for Mental Illness Latino de Utah Taskforce, the Salt Lake City Office of Diversity and Human Rights, Dean Curtis, Adelante Partnership, and Christine Leishman Nelson. The awards were created 2002 to honor the life of the late Senator Suazo by recognizing the work of those who continue Sen. Suazo’s legacy through dedication to the goal of social and economic justice. The awards ceremony and reception will begin at 6 p.m. in the Okazaki Community Meeting Room of the University of Utah College of Social Work’s Goodwill Humanitarian Building, 395 South 1500 East, Salt Lake City.

University of Utah Names Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs

Ruth V. Watkins will bring her extensive experience as an educator and administrator to the University of Utah as the new senior vice president for academic affairs. Currently the dean for the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences at the University of Illinois and professor of speech and hearing science, psychology and linguistics, Watkins was selected after a national search. David Pershing held the position for 14 years before becoming president in 2012.

Keck Grant for Utah Nanofab

The University of Utah’s nanofabrication facility received $200,000 from the W.M. Keck Foundation to provide engineering education materials about length scales to students at the University of Utah, community colleges and four-year colleges nationwide.
