Utah Ballet’s “Focal Pointe” to Feature Works of Classical and Contemporary Ballet

The University of Utah’s resident ballet company, Utah Ballet, long recognized as one of the finest collegiate dance troupes in America, will present its spring concert, “Focal Pointe,” in Kingsbury Hall, April 8 through 10, at 7:30 p.m., with an additional 2 p.m. matinee on Saturday. The program runs 90 minutes. Tickets for the event range from $5 to $12. Tickets are available by calling 801-581-7100, 801-355-ARTS, online at www.kingsburyhall.org, or at any ArtTix outlet. Conrad Ludlow and Richard Wacko, both associate professors in the University’s Ballet Department, are co-artistic directors for the event.

Medical Director of Student Health at U Named Physician of the Year

Today the Utah Medical Association Board of Trustees named Victoria E. Judd, clinical professor of pediatrics and medical director of student health at the University of Utah, Physician of the Year. The honor was presented by Governor Olene Walker at the Utah State Capitol in conjunction with the signing of a proclamation designating March 30 as Doctors’ Day. Judd is the third woman physician to receive the award since its inception by the Utah Medical Association in 1978. The honor recognizes one physician annually for his or her outstanding contribution to the practice of medicine.

U Physicists in Gamma Ray Search

About a dozen faculty members and students from the University of Utah Dept. of Physics are involved in VERITAS, a $13.1 million gamma ray observatory to be built in Arizona. The observatory will be an array of dish-shaped telescopes designed to observe extremely violent events in the universe that generate high-energy gamma rays.

“Grassroots” Party Candidates Lowe & Harrington Win U of U Student Body Elections

“Grassroots” party presidential and vice presidential candidates Alex Lowe and Bobby Harrington are the winners of the Associated Students of the University of Utah (ASUU) final elections. Lowe and Harrington beat RE: Party candidates Chris Carlston and Ali Hasnain by 755 votes. (Lowe and Harrington received 2,936 votes. Carlston and Hasnain received 2,181votes.) The results were made public during an announcement party in the Olpin Union’s Crimson Underground last night.
