Review of U Swim Program Underway

University of Utah

March 25, 2013 – President David Pershing announced today that the independent review examining allegations made against the University of Utah’s swimming and diving program has commenced.  The members of the review team will report their findings directly to a subcommittee of the University’s Board of Trustees headed by Vice Chair Michele Mattsson.

“As I have stated from the beginning of this process, I am committed to a thorough and independent review of all the facts,” said President Pershing. “Upon reflection, and with this in mind, I have determined that our Board of Trustees is in the best position to lead this independent review and I have asked the board to oversee this important task.”

“Earlier today, I met with members of the University’s swim team to affirm our deep commitment to their academic and athletic success, student-athlete experience and the future of our swim program,” added Pershing.

“A review team is now in place to examine the allegations that have been made,” said Trustee Mattsson.  “We have retained outside experts to determine what took place, what was communicated to the University, and how it responded.  We are also seeking recommendations from the review group to ensure the continued safety and well-being of our student-athletes.”

The Trustees have retained an additional third-party expert to augment the independent review.  John T. Nielsen, a former prosecutor and Utah commissioner of public safety, will join attorneys Michael Glazier and Alan Sullivan.

The review is proceeding expeditiously and at its conclusion, a briefing will be delivered to the Trustees and the findings will be made public.
