Homecoming Week 2013: True to U

Sept. 4, 2013 – The University of Utah’s annual weeklong Homecoming celebration promises something for everyone, beginning with the Legacy of Lowell Community Service Day on Sept. 7, and culminating on Sept. 14 with the football game against Pac-12 peer Oregon State University. Students, alumni and other U fans won’t want to miss out on the chance to show their spirit and get in on the fun. The complete schedule of events is listed below. Saturday, Sept. 7
10th Annual Legacy of Lowell Community Service Day: 8 a.m. to noon

The Lowell Bennion Community Service Center gets Homecoming Week started with a large-scale community service event. More than 1,000 volunteers from the community are expected to participate in more than 20 service projects throughout Salt Lake City, including organizing dental hygiene kits, helping with ecological restoration and making quilts for refugees. Volunteers will meet at Glendale Middle School, 1430 W. Andrew Ave. From there, they will be transported to the service site of their choice. Breakfast and lunch are provided. U alumni chapters around the country are also supporting the effort by performing service projects in their local communities. More details are available here.

Tuesday, Sept. 10
House Decorating: 4 p.m.
In keeping with tradition, students will participate in a house decorating competition on Greek Row and other campus locations. Decorated houses will be judged for originality and expression of this year’s Homecoming theme, “True to U.”

Student Alumni Board Reunion: 6:30 p.m.
$15 per person
Also on Sept. 10, the U Alumni Association’s Student Alumni Board celebrates its 25th anniversary by inviting former board members back to campus for a night of fun memories and friendship. The reunion will take place on campus at the Alumni House, 155 S. Central Campus Drive. Dinner and entertainment included. Online registration is available through Sept. 8.

Wednesday, Sept. 11
World Leaders Forum: 11 a.m.

The Tanner Humanities Center presents the 2013 World Leaders Lecture Forum featuring Human Rights activist and best-selling author John Prendergast, at Libby Gardner Hall, 1375 E. Presidents Circle. This event is free and open to the public; no tickets required. More details are available.

Emeritus Alumni Reunion: 4 p.m.
$35 per person
Also on Sept. 11, U graduates from 40 or more years ago will hold their Emeritus Alumni Reunion on campus at the Alumni House, 155 S. Central Campus Drive. Special guests are members of the class of 1973, the newest members of the Emeritus club. While reminiscing and renewing acquaintances, guests will also enjoy a guided bus tour of the University campus, with a special stop at the brand new Football Center. Online registration is available through Sept. 6.

Thursday, Sept. 12
U Farmers Market: 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

During Homecoming Week, guests can also enjoy the University of Utah’s 6th annual campus Farmers Market, connecting local growers and artisans with a campus community that desires access to fresh, healthy, local produce and unique arts and crafts. This event is free and open to the campus and greater community.

Songfest (6 p.m.) and Crimson Rally (7 p.m.)
Also on Sept. 12, the energy on campus really starts to heat-up in anticipation of the homecoming football game against Oregon State University, beginning with the annual Greek Songfest presentation of song-and-dance routines, judged for creativity and presentation in the Union Ballroom at 6 p.m. The annual Crimson Rally will get under way immediately after Songfest concludes, on the Union Plaza at 7 p.m. The pep rally features remarks by Head Football Coach Kyle Whittingham and some of his players, the marching band, cheerleaders and the U’s mascot, Swoop. Both events are free and open to the public.

Friday, Sept. 13
Scholarship Scramble Golf Tournament: 8 a.m.
$150 per person or $600 per foursome

Gather a group of friends and tee it up for the 18-hole Homecoming Scholarship Scramble Golf Tournament at Bonneville Golf Course to benefit the Alumni Association’s Student Scholarship Fund. Online registration is available through Sept. 9.

Homecoming Student Dance: 8 p.m. to 1 a.m.
Tickets: $10 per student or $15 for two students
At the Homecoming Dance, students get their groove on at The Depot at The Gateway, 400 W. South Temple. Tickets may be purchased at the Associated Students of the University of Utah office, Room 234 of the Student Union, or online.

Saturday, Sept. 14 – Homecoming Day
5K Run/Walk/Stroll: 8:30 a.m.
Day-of registration 7:30-8:15 a.m.
Registration fees: $30 advance, or $35 day-of, per runner/walker/stroller. Students/U faculty/U staff/Alumni Association members pay $20 in advance, or $25 day-of, per participant.

On Homecoming Day, participants of all ages and abilities are invited to the Alumni House, 155 S. Central Campus Drive, for the ever popular 5K Run/Walk/Stroll on the U campus.

Kids 1K Fun Run: 9:30 a.m.
Day-of registration 7:30-9 a.m.
Advance registration fee: $12 per child or $15 day-of run

Kids 1K Fun Run for children ages 12 and younger.

The 5K and Fun Run are organized by the Alumni Association’s Young Alumni Board to raise scholarship funds for students. Two students will be selected to receive a $500 scholarship, and the two student groups with the largest number of race entries will each be awarded a $1,000 scholarship. Other prizes are awarded to participants in various categories including the fastest male and female runner, and runners wearing the best red-themed costume. Online registration is available through Sept. 10.

Ute Walk: 5:30 p.m.
When the players arrive, join the fun Ute Walk procession north down Guardsman Way to Rice-Eccles Stadium.

Utah vs. Oregon State University Pre-game Tailgate: 6 p.m.
$15 Alumni Association members and children under 12; $20 per nonmember adult
Utah fans can get pumped up for the game and enjoy food, music, fun and prizes at the tailgate party at 500 South and Guardsman Way (east of the tennis center). Online registration is available through Sept. 10. Walk-ups—if available—are welcome the day of the event at no additional charge.

Utah vs. Oregon State Homecoming Football Game: 8 p.m.
At Rice-Eccles Stadium. Go Utes!
