The U’s Economic Impact includes 17 Start-up Companies in 2007

The University of Utah is an economic engine for the State of Utah and 2007 fiscal year-end results prove it. Seventeen companies were launched from technologies developed at The University of Utah within the last year. The companies not only help move research forward through the licensing royalty revenue they bring in, but they provide jobs for the people of Utah and help to strengthen the economy in the state. The 17 companies are based on research in fields such as medicinal sciences, engineering, and fine arts.

Engineering an Education for Kids

Some 1,500 fifth- and sixth-graders from 17 schools will erect towers of drinking straws, catapult marshmallows and build clay fish during March 26-29 as the University of Utah College of Engineering hosts Elementary Engineering Week. “We want to introduce young students to engineering concepts via hands-on activities,” says Deidre Schoenfeld, who organizes the event as the college’s outreach and diversity coordinator. “We hope these fun activities will encourage them to continue studying math and science.”

U Alumni Association Board Welcomes Six New Members

Six community leaders and University of Utah graduates have been appointed to serve a three-year term on the U’s Alumni Association Board of Directors (UUAA). The new board members will join the current board of 24 to oversee myriad activities associated with four affiliated boards – the Beehive Honor Society, Emeritus Alumni, Young Alumni, and Student Alumni.

Rosie Joe House to Receive AIA Award this Weekend

A home University of Utah architecture graduate students built for Rosie Joe and her family in Bluff, Utah, a small town located in the San Juan River Valley, is receiving yet another award. On Saturday, Hank Louis, University College of Architecture + Planning (CA+P) adjunct professor, will accept an award from The American Institute of Architects (AIA) Western Mountain Region (WMR) at an awards banquet at the Arizona Biltmore Resort.
