Community Invited to Experience Diverse Offerings at First “Discover U Days” Celebration

From cutting-edge research to rowdy football, from stimulating lectures to theatre and dance, from Red Butte Garden to the Medical Center, the University of Utah offers myriad opportunities for learning and enjoyment. The community can get a sampling of these and other resources at the first annual “Discover U Days” celebration, to be held Friday and Saturday, Apr. 21 and 22. The two-day event will include the “Red & White” spring exhibition football game, beginning at 1 p.m., on Saturday, at Rice-Eccles Stadium, giving the public a much-anticipated preview of fall Utah football. All events are free and open to the public, with the exception of evening concerts, for which discounted tickets are available.

Veterans’ Day Commemoration to Focus on World War II and Korean War Heroes

The University of Utah will honor 11 veterans at a full-dress military ceremony as part of its annual Veterans’ Day commemoration program on Friday, Nov. 11 at 11:00 a.m. in the main ballroom of the Olpin Union Building. The Utah veterans who served our country in World War II, the Korean War and Vietnam will be presented with honorary medallions by University of Utah President Michael K. Young. Nearly 100 cadets and midshipmen from the military science ROTC programs will present the ceremony, which will include a 21-gun cannon salute. The group of 11 honorees was selected from over 50 nominations submitted by Utah citizens.

Robots will engage in sumo wrestling, toy cougars will be catapulted through the air, eggs will survive or splatter during “Egglympic” events and students will present design projects on Friday, April 22 during the University of Utah’s eighth annual Department of Mechanical Engineering Design Day.

New Dinosaur from Utah’s Red Rocks

Utah’s red rocks – world-famous attractions at numerous national parks, monuments and state parks – have yielded a rare skeleton of a new species of plant-eating dinosaur that lived 185 million years ago and may have been buried alive by a collapsing sand dune. The discovery confirms the widespread success of sauropodomorph dinosaurs during the Early Jurassic Period.
