100+ WEST SALT LAKE U OF U GRADS TO BE RECOGNIZED BY UNP’S PARTNERS IN THE PARK

Over 100 west Salt Lake University of Utah graduates will be honored at University Neighborhood Partners 4th annual “Partners in the Park” kick-off evening on Tuesday, June 12 from 6:00p to 8:00p at Jordan Park (1060 S 900 W). University of Utah Vice President for Institutional Advancement Fred Esplin will offer congratulations to the 117 University of Utah 2007 graduates. Also recognized are six West High School graduates who participated in a UNP partnership at West High that are attending college in the fall. Utah House Representative David Litvack is scheduled to attend.

West High Students Shadow University of Utah Students in the “Leap to the U” Program

Thirty-four students from West High School will have the opportunity to experience what it’s like to be in college by partnering with University of Utah students for “Shadow Day” on Wednesday, February 28th. The partnership is part of “LEAP to the U” one of the projects of the LEAP or “Learning, Engagement, Achievement, and Progress” (LEAP) Program. According to Carolan Ownby, Director of the LEAP Peer Advisors, “LEAP to the U is designed to encourage potential first generation students to think of college as a realistic possibility in the future.”

New Gene Linked to Major Risk of Macular Degeneration May Provide Key to Prevention and Treatment

Researchers at the John A. Moran Eye Center at the University of Utah have identified a gene called HTRA1 that contributes to a major risk of Age Related Macular Degeneration (AMD), the most common cause of irreversible vision loss in the developed world. The discovery of this gene allows anyone to take a simple blood test to find out if they are up to 700% more likely to develop AMD than the average person. This is particularly important for individuals who have a family history of blinding eye conditions.

Synergy Award Winners Promote Cooperation among Utah Researchers

The Office of the Vice President for Research today announced the 2006 Synergy awardees. Synergy is a new program designed to stimulate discovery of new opportunities bringing research groups together in new ways. To be eligible for any of the 1 million dollars in grant money, applicants had to submit research proposals from at least two different University departments. Preference was given to inter-college collaborators.

Filmmaker Byron Hurt will be at the University of Utah for a screening and panel discussion of his film “Beyond Beats and Rhymes: A Documentary about Manhood in Hip-Hop Culture,” on Thursday, at 7 p.m., in the Social and Behavioral Science Auditorium, 380 S. 1530 E., on the University of Utah campus. Sponsored by the U’s Women”s Resource Center, the Associated Students of the University of Utah (ASUU) and the Utah Coalition Against Sexual Assault (UCASA), the event free and open to the public.
