U Bleeds to Reclaim Crown

The seventh annual “Bleed Red” blood drive competition between the University of Utah (the U) and Utah State University (USU) will take place Friday, Aug. 28 through Thursday, Sept. 3-the week of the big football game between the two teams. For the past five years, the U has won the battle on the football field, but USU has taken home the trophy for the blood drive competition. This year U students are determined to win both on the field and in blood donations.

Associate Vice President for Academic Affairs and Undergraduate Studies Charles A. Wight has been selected from a pool of nearly a dozen candidates to be the new Dean of the Graduate School at the University of Utah. He replaces David Chapman who will return to teaching and academic research.

The University of Utah Clinical Neurosciences center has been recognized among the nation’s top neuroscience programs, receiving the highest designation as a Neuroscience Center of Excellence (COE), according to the Neuroscience Center of Excellence Survey conducted by NeuStrategy, Inc., based in Chicago.

University of Utah physicists and chemists developed a new method that uses a mirror of tiny silver “nanoparticles” so microscopes can reveal the internal structure of nearly opaque biological materials like bone, tumor cells and the iridescent green scales of the so-called “photonic beetle.”

Executive Director of Alumni Association Recognized for 20 Years of Service

At half-time during last night’s Lady Ute’s game against Louisville, M. John Ashton, executive director of the University of Utah Alumni Association, was honored for 20 years of service to the University of Utah. He was presented with a framed U of U basketball jersey with the #20 in recognition of his years of service to the University and its over 220,000 alumni, as well as for his long-term support of Utah athletics.

Defining Your Path Conference Prepares 8th Grade Girls for Success

On October 25, eighth-grade girls from around the state will explore possible career paths in arts, business, technology, writing, science, engineering, law, and more at the fifth annual “Defining Your Path” conference, presented by Youth Education at The University of Utah and the American Association of University Women (Salt Lake City branch). The conference will help students realize their potential by investigating options for future careers. Presenters will help attendees identify their paths by boosting awareness of their interests, personality, motivation, and academic abilities.

July 10, 2008 – University Health Care’s gynecologic and cancer care are rated 21^st and 40^th in the country in U.S. News & World Reports’ 19th annual survey of America’s Best Hospitals. The rankings place University Health Care among the nation’s top providers for the 15^th time.

Neighborhood House Children Enjoy Musical “Spell-a-bration” with University of Utah Students

LEAP students at the University of Utah are working with Salt Lake City’s Neighborhood House to host an event that mixes music, dance, painting, photography, and video.

What was America like, before Columbus?

Scattered across the landscape below were countless islands of forest, many of them almost-perfect circles-heaps of green in a sea of yellow grass. Each island rose as much as sixty feet above the floodplain, allowing trees to grow that otherwise could not endure the water. The forests were bridged by raised beams, as straight as a rifle shot and up to three miles long.

Award-winning author Charles C. Mann describes a landscape contrary to the traditionally held image of the Americas as sparsely populated virgin forest. New evidence, he claims, indicates the Amazon rain forest is largely a human artifact and that the Western Hemisphere pre-Columbus was vastly more sophisticated than has been thought, “an altogether more salubrious place to live at the time than, say, Europe.”
