Internet Impact Garners U Top Ranking

The internet footprint left behind by an institution of higher education can show its contribution to scientific research and other scholarship, and that can be compared to the internet impact of other schools to develop an overall ranking. That’s the method by which the Webometric Ranking of World Universities selected institutions of higher education to be on its list.

Governor Appoints Poet Laureate

Today, Governor Jon M. Huntsman, Jr., named Katharine Coles as Utah’s new State Poet Laureate. Coles, an associate professor of English at the University of Utah, has published two novels and three collections of poetry. Her poems and short stories have appeared in numerous periodicals and anthologies. Coles has a long history of professional and community service, and has received several awards for her work. Her most recent collection of poems, “Fault,” will be published (Red Hen Press) in 2008.

Block U Lighting Ceremony Planned for Halftime of Utah vs. TCU Football Game

An official lighting ceremony for the newly renovated Block U will take place on Thursday, Oct. 5, 2006 during halftime of the Ute football game versus TCU. The new Light Emitting Diode (LED) lights on the large concrete symbol of the University of Utah will be officially turned on “live” during an appearance on the field by higher education philanthropists Ira A. and Mary Lou Fulton.

U of U Singers Triumph in Tolosa, Spain, at the Grand Prix for Choral Singing

The University of Utah Singers, the elite choral ensemble of the University’s School of Music, has been awarded the 18th European Grand Prix for Choral Singing for 2006, held in Tolosa, Spain. The announcement was made last Saturday night, following performances by competition contenders and the University Singers, a mixed choir comprised of 47 University students under the direction of Brady Allred.
