Utah Eye Researchers Identify Gene Mutation Responsible For Severe Form of Vision Loss

Researchers at the University of Utah’s John A. Moran Eye Center have identified a gene mutation responsible for a severe form of a blinding eye disease known as adult on-set foveomacular dystrophy, a form of macular degeneration. The research, published in the February 2003 issue of the American Journal of Ophthalmology, could help eye doctors reduce the risk of blindness in families carrying the mutation.

Food Drive Prior to Utah-BYU Game Nets Truckloads of Food and More Than $7,500

One outcome of last Saturday’s football game in which the Utes beat BYU 13 to 6 is the contribution that University of Utah students, faculty, staff and fans will make to the Utah Food Bank. During the two weeks prior to the “Holy War” football game, Ute fans and campus members contributed truckloads of food items and $7,620 in cash to the tenth annual Utah-BYU Food Drive. The University of Utah and BYU Alumni Associations sponsored the project.

Troops to Reenact Camp Douglas for 140th Anniversary

Just as they did in 1862, during the heat of the Civil War, Union troops will set up an encampment at Fort Douglas and prepare to replace Federal troops recalled to the East. The reenactment takes place Saturday, October 26 as part of the 140th anniversary commemoration of the founding of Camp Douglas, later to become Fort Douglas.
