Violence in Identity

Amartya Sen, distinguished economist, philosopher, Nobel laureate and Lamont University Professor at Harvard will speak on Friday, March 2 at noon at Libby Gardner Hall. The talk, titled “Violence in Identity,” is part of the “Values & Violence: Intangible Aspects of Terrorism” conference, sponsored by the Institute of Public & International Affairs (IPIA), the College of Social and Behavioral Science, the Barbara L. & Norman C. Tanner Center for Nonviolent Human Rights Advocacy, and the S.J. Quinney College of Law.

U’s Wellness Fair Activities Include Free Health Screenings and 5K Race

University of Utah President Michael K. Young has declared next week, Oct. 23 through 27, Wellness Week at the U. In an effort to maintain a healthy and well-informed campus community, the Student Health Center will be sponsoring the sixteenth annual Wellness Fair, on Wednesday, Oct. 25, from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m., in the Union Ballroom. The fair has traditionally been a highlight of the week because of the free samples and health screenings. Last year more than 3,000 people attended the mid-week event.

Immigration Continues to Fuel Growth in Western States and U.S.

Between the years 2000 and 2030, the populations of Arizona and Nevada are projected to double, with Nevada soon overtaking Utah to become the third most populous state in the Intermountain region. (At present Arizona ranks number one in the region, followed by Colorado, Utah and Nevada.) Immigration is projected to continue to contribute to the growth of the U.S. and Utah, just as it did during the beginning of the 20th century. However, the present wave of immigration is influencing Utah to a lesser extent than it is the nation as a whole, according to the latest issue of the Utah Economic and Business Review, a publication of the Bureau of Economic and Business Research (BEBR) at the University of Utah.

U of U Names 12 Service-Learning Scholars

The recognition honors students who complete 400 hours of community service, 10 credit hours of service-learning classes and a major integrative service project (ISP) that combines academics with concentrated community work.
