Photo Exhibit to Chronicle and Humanize Latinos’ Experiences in Utah

According to 2000 census figures, the Hispanic/Latino population is the largest and most rapidly growing minority group in Utah, increasing from 4.9 percent of the population in 1990 to 9 percent just a decade later. Yet, according to Armando Solorzano, Utah has always been home to Latinos as their origins can be traced back to Native American tribes that inhabited the area 17,000 years ago.

Finance Professor Appointed to Energy Pricing Investigation Team

Recent assertions of the possibility of price manipulation in California and the West by Enron or other energy providers/brokers has prompted the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) to conduct a fact-finding investigation. Dr. Hendrik Bessembinder, Blaine Huntsman Professor of Finance at the University of Utah’s David Eccles School of Business, will serve on the investigating committee, along with two other academics, two energy analyst consultants, and members of the FERC staff.

Research Indicates Free Rooms Not An Incentive For Hotel Patrons

In a May 23 Wall Street Journal article called “Desperate to Fill Their Beds, Hotels Offer Free Rooms,” Ron Lieber reports that three of the largest hotel chains in United States are giving away free rooms in an attempt to entice business users back to their hotels after a fall-off in travel following September 11. Rohit Verma, Associate Professor of Operations Management at the David Eccles School of Business at the University of Utah says such incentives won’t be effective.
