Renowned Brain Researchers to Present at 2006 U of U Philosophy Colloquium

The University of Utah’s College of Humanities and The Brain Institute will present the U’s 12th Annual Philosophy Department Colloquium, “Neuroscience and Moral Psychology,” Feb. 9 through 11 at the U’s new Health Sciences Education Building, 50 North Medical Drive; in Orson Spencer Hall, 260 S. Central Campus Drive; and in the Language and Communication Building, 255 S. Central Campus Drive. Philosophers and scientists will gather to discuss the neurological roots of moral psychology. The colloquium is free and open to the public.

U of U Days of Remembrance Events Commemorate Victims of Holocaust

Duke University History Professor Claudia Koonz, who has studied gender and “ordinary people” in Nazi Germany, will deliver the keynote address for this year’s Days of Remembrance at the University of Utah. The annual events precede the national Holocaust Remembrance Day, May 5, and the Utah State Holocaust Remembrance Day, May 6, and commemorate the millions of victims of the Holocaust. All events are free and open to the public, with the exception of the workshop taken for credit.

Utah Ballet’s “Focal Pointe” to Feature Works of Classical and Contemporary Ballet

The University of Utah’s resident ballet company, Utah Ballet, long recognized as one of the finest collegiate dance troupes in America, will present its spring concert, “Focal Pointe,” in Kingsbury Hall, April 8 through 10, at 7:30 p.m., with an additional 2 p.m. matinee on Saturday. The program runs 90 minutes. Tickets for the event range from $5 to $12. Tickets are available by calling 801-581-7100, 801-355-ARTS, online at www.kingsburyhall.org, or at any ArtTix outlet. Conrad Ludlow and Richard Wacko, both associate professors in the University’s Ballet Department, are co-artistic directors for the event.

FCC Policy Chief Robert Pepper to Speak at U of U on The Changing Media Landscape

Next week Robert Pepper, chief of policy development at the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), will be at the University of Utah to present “Digital Migration and the Changing Media Landscape,” the seventeenth annual B. Aubrey Fisher Memorial Lecture. The Oct. 16th event will be held in room 1110 of the University’s Language & Communication Building (LNCO), 255 S. Central Campus Drive (1610 E.), and is free and open to the public. Sponsored by the U’s Department of Communication, the lecture will begin at 7:30 p.m. and will be followed by a reception.

Final Lecture to Focus on Weapons’ Proliferation and Conflict in the Greater Middle East

Geoffrey Kemp, director of the Regional Strategic Programs at The Nixon Center in Washington, D.C., will be on campus next Tuesday, Apr. 8, to deliver the ninth and final speech in a series of University lectures focusing on the Iraqi-American confrontation. Kemp, a visiting professor at The Paul H. Nitze School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS) of Johns Hopkins University, will present “Powder Keg: Weapons’ Proliferation and Conflict in the Greater Middle East,” from 2 until 3:30 p.m., in the Dumke Auditorium of the Utah Museum of Fine Arts, located next to the David Eccles School of Business. The event, co-sponsored by the Office of the President, the Department of Political Science and the Colleges of Humanities and Social and Behavioral Science, is free and open to the public.

Reaffirming Equal Opportunity: Keeping the Dream Alive

This year’s theme, “Reaffirming Equal Opportunity: Keeping the Dream Alive,” was chosen to help inform current local and national debates about equality and civil rights. The celebration will highlight the contributions and legacy of King, as work continues toward the realization of equal opportunity for all.

U of U Commencement on May 7 to Graduate More than 7,000

Commencement ceremonies at the University of Utah will be held on Friday, May 7, at 9 a.m. in the Jon M. Huntsman Center. The class of 2010, comprised of 7,034 graduates, will receive degrees that morning. The procession of diverse students, who come from 76 countries, 50 U.S. states and 27 of Utah’s 29 counties, will begin at 8:20 a.m. Guests should plan to be in their seats prior to 8:20 a.m. Tickets are not required.

Novelist Isabel Allende will deliver this year’s Tanner Lecture on Human Values on Dec. 2 at 7 p.m. in the University of Utah Olpin Union Ballroom, 200 S. Central Campus Drive. The talk, titled “In the Hearts of Women,” is free and open to the public.
