Utah Hires Urban Meyer As Its New Football Coach

The University of Utah has hired Urban Meyer as its new head football coach, Utah Director of Athletics Dr. Chris Hill announced today. Meyer, the head coach at Bowling Green State University for the past two years, has agreed to a five-year contract worth $400,000 a year.

University of Utah Student Named Rhodes Scholar

Gretchen J. Domek, a University of Utah biochemistry student, was one of 32 American students named a Rhodes Scholar on Saturday. The competitive two-year scholarship to Oxford University for international graduate study covers educational costs, travel expenses, and a living and vacation stipend, and is renewable for a third year.

Next week the University of Utah freshman class hopes to collect canned food and raise $5,000 by sponsoring a variety of Freshman Fever Week activities-live music, free food, a date auction, kissing booth, movie screening and a Friday-night pep rally before the Nov. 23 Utah-BYU football game. Donated funds and food will benefit the South Valley Sanctuary, an emergency shelter for victims of domestic violence, and the Utah Food Bank, a non-profit agency that distributes goods to all 70 Utah food pantries.

U of U to Honor Eleven Utah Veterans at Annual Commemoration Program

To commemorate the profound contribution of Utah veterans to the peace, security, and freedom of our country, the University of Utah will present its fifth annual Veterans’ Day Commemoration program on Monday, November 11 in the Olpin Union Building. Eleven Utah veterans will be honored at a full dress military ceremony starting at 11 a.m. in the Union Ballroom. The ceremony will include a 21-gun cannon salute.

A University of Utah biologist used a high-speed video camera to identify a tiny tadpole’s distinct way of eating dinner. Instead of filtering food from water like other species of frog larvae, the petite polliwog extends its tube-shaped mouth, and then sucks in immature shrimp, water fleas or other prey in a mere six one-thousandths of a second.
