U of U Freshmen to Raise Charitable Funds

November 13, 2002 — Next week the University of Utah freshman class hopes to collect canned food and raise $5,000 by sponsoring a variety of Freshman Fever Week activities-live music, free food, a date auction, kissing booth, movie screening and a Friday-night pep rally before the Nov. 23 Utah-BYU football game. Donated funds and food will benefit the South Valley Sanctuary, an emergency shelter for victims of domestic violence, and the Utah Food Bank, a non-profit agency that distributes goods to all 70 Utah food pantries.

Freshman Fever Week, Nov. 18 to Nov. 22, will be sponsored by the Freshman Council of the Associated Students of the University of Utah (ASUU), the U’s student government.

“We wanted to grab some of the enthusiasm of the Utah-BYU game and raise money for local charities at the same time,” said Jen Dolan, ASUU Freshman Council member. “Freshman Fever Week activities will not only benefit the South Valley Sanctuary and the Utah Food Bank, they will be a lot of fun.”

Collection of canned food items is in conjunction with the Utah-BYU Food Drive, sponsored by the University of Utah and BYU Alumni Associations. Food collection boxes will be located at the Alumni House; Accounts Payable, Park Building, main and 4th floors; Annex Building, Room 1009; ASUU Offices; The Daily Utah Chronicle Office; College of Law; Department of Philosophy; Department of Social Work; the Eccles Broadcast Center; the Eccles Institute for Human Genetics, Building 533, Room 2100; Fraternity and Sorority Houses; LDS Institute of Religion; Olpin Union Building, Main Floor and Food Service Court; Purchasing, 151 Annex; Student Support Services, 2075 Annex; U of U Hospital Human Resources; U of U Medical Center Development; and the Women’s Resource Center.
