Five U Students Win NSF Fellowships


University of Utah Presidents Circle.

Five University of Utah students have won prestigious Graduate Research Fellowships worth more than $126,000 each from the National Science Foundation. The fellowships winners, their undergraduate majors at the University of Utah and where they plan to attend graduate school are:

  • Justin Jenson, chemistry and bioengineering, Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
  • Nicholas Spiropulos, chemistry, University of Utah.
  • Katie Joyce Sciuto, bioengineering, University of Utah.
  • Melinda Gurr, anthropology, Syracuse University.
  • Eric Kenneth Gibbons, bioengineering, Stanford University.

Each fellowship carries three years of annual support at $30,000 per year to the student plus $12,000 a year in cost-of-education allowances to the graduate school. The students also receive supercomputer access and opportunities for international research and professional development.
