U Students Postpone School and Graduation to Serve in War

Twenty-three-year-old Eric Alder enrolled in winter semester at the University of Utah and was planning to graduate in economics this Friday, May 2. He was in the process of filling out the forms for his commencement cap and gown when his U.S. Marine Corps reserve unit-“Charlie Company”-was called up in March to assist with the war effort in Iraq. Instead of donning graduation robes this week, he is fulfilling various assignments in Iraq while enduring 110-degree heat.

Utah Mathematician Appointed President to Lead CMI

Carlson, mathematics professor at the University of Utah, as CMI’s second president, effective August 2003. Hurricane Winds Carried Ocean Salt & Plankton Far Inland

Researchers found surprising evidence of sea salt and frozen plankton in high, cold, cirrus clouds, the remnants of Hurricane Nora, over Utah and the U.S. plains states. Although the 1997 hurricane was a strong eastern Pacific storm, her high ice-crystal clouds extended many miles inland, carrying ocean phenomena deep into the U.S. heartland.

Diverse Class of More Than 6,500 Set to Graduate From University on May 2

The University of Utah class of 2002-2003, comprised of a Rhodes Scholar and students from 43 countries, 45 U.S. states and 21 Utah counties, will march to Elgar’s “Pomp and Circumstance” on Friday, May 2 at the Jon M. Huntsman Center. The procession of graduates will start at 8:20 a.m. with the commencement ceremony beginning at 9 a.m. (Guests should plan to be in their seats prior to 8:30 a.m. Tickets are not required.)

Governor Mike Leavitt Proclaims April 22nd Ute Ski Team Day

Governor Mike Leavitt has proclaimed Tuesday, April 22nd Ute Ski Team Day in the state of Utah. The proclamation was issued to honor the ski team for winning the 2003 NCAA Ski Championships and in recognition of years of success on the slopes. This marks the 11th time the Ute skiers have won the national championship, preserving their tradition as one of the nation’s top collegiate skiing programs.
