The University of Utah ranks 117th out the more than 1,400 colleges and universities surveyed for the 2004 edition of the “America’s Best Colleges” guidebook from U.S. News & World Report. The magazine ranks schools annually based on a complicated system of peer assessments and statistical data.

Now, Utah and New York researchers have discovered how a gene in the AIDS virus hijacks the human gene and turns it into a weapon that prevents reproduction of immune-system white blood cells, leaving AIDS patients vulnerable to deadly infections and cancer.

Ute Fans to “Bleed Red for the Community” Prior to Aug. 28 Game

The University of Utah and Utah State University (USU) will hold a competitive blood drive next week, prior to the football season opener on Aug. 28th between the Utes and the Aggies at Rice-Eccles Stadium. Both university communities, long-time, instate rivals, will cooperatively replenish much-needed local blood supplies. The contest winner will be announced during the Thursday evening game. Last year Utah collected 416 units of blood and USU collected 399 units.

MBA Students Learn the Importance of Lending a Hand

The business leaders of tomorrow are rolling up their sleeves for kids with physical and developmental challenges who need help now. On Friday, August 15 approximately 55 new MBA students from the David Eccles School of Business at the University of Utah will spend their day performing a community service project for Camp Kostopulos. Students will be staining the Camp Kostopulos dock and pavillion, sanding and painting picnic tables, and netting and raking the camp’s pond. Work will begin at 8:30 a.m. and end at about 2:30 p.m.

Orientation For International Students Eases Scholars Into Life In The U.S.

Elena Cheryauka vividly recalls the culture shock she experienced when she arrived in Salt Lake City from Siberia four years ago. She spoke only Russian and German. By joining the University International Center’s Cross-Culture Club she met other women in situations similar to her own. They socialized and, together, were able to overcome many of the same challenges.
