Homecoming Week 2012 is Red, White and U

Sept. 4, 2012 – The University of Utah’s annual weeklong football Homecoming celebration promises something for everyone, beginning with the Legacy of Lowell Community Service Day on Sept. 8, and culminating on Sept. 15 with the much-anticipated faceoff with BYU, marking the last rivalry home game scheduled until 2016. Students, alumni and U fans won’t want to miss out on the chance to show their spirit and get in on the fun. The complete schedule of events is listed below. Saturday, Sept. 8
9th Annual Legacy of Lowell Community Service Day: 8 a.m. to noon

The Lowell Bennion Community Service Center gets Homecoming Week started with a large-scale community service event. More than 1,000 volunteers from the community are expected to participate in more than 20 service projects throughout Salt Lake City, including organizing dental hygiene kits, helping with ecological restoration and making quilts for refugees. Volunteers will meet at Glendale Middle School, 1430 W. Andrew Ave.  From there, they  will be transported to the service site of their choice. Breakfast and lunch is provided. U alumni chapters around the country are also supporting the effort by performing service projects in their local communities. Tuesday, Sept. 11
House Decorating: 4 p.m.
In keeping with tradition, students will participate in a house decorating competition on Greek Row and other campus locations. Decorated houses will be judged for originality and expression of this year’s Homecoming theme, “Red, White and U”.

Emeritus Reunion: 4 p.m.
$30 per person, which includes museum admission
Also on Sept. 11, U graduates from 40 or more years ago will hold their Emeritus Reunion at the new Natural History Museum of Utah. Special guests are members of the class of 1972, the newest members of the Emeritus club. While reminiscing and renewing acquaintances, guests will enjoy a self-guided tour of the museum and a special presentation by museum director Sarah B. George. Thursday, Sept. 13
Songfest and Crimson Pep Rally: 6 p.m.

The energy on campus really starts to heat-up in anticipation of the homecoming football game against BYU, beginning with the annual Greek Songfest presentation of song-and-dance routines judged for creativity and presentation. The annual Crimson Pep Rally will get underway immediately after Songfest concludes. The pep rally features a talk by Head Football Coach Kyle Whittingham and appearances by the players, the marching band, cheerleaders and the U’s mascot, Swoop. The events are free and open to the public and will be held respectively at the Union ballroom and Union plaza.

World Leader Lecture: 3:30 p.m.
Kingsbury Hall hosts the World Leader Lecture with Dr. Mohamed ElBaradei, Nobel Peace Prize Laureate. The lecture is free and open to the public. More details available at http://kingsburyhall.utah.edu/performances/world-leaders-lecture.

Friday, Sept. 14
Scholarship Scramble Golf Tournament: 8 a.m.
$150 per person or $600 per foursome

Gather a group of friends and tee-it-up for the 18-hole Homecoming Scholarship Scramble Golf Tournament at Bonneville Golf Course to benefit the Alumni Association’s Student Scholarship Fund. Register online at http://www.alumni.utah.edu/golf/.

UNight: 6-7 p.m.
The 48-hour game day experience for fans, families and visitors begins Friday night before the football game at The Gateway shopping center downtown. Join U fans in a parade led by the marching band, dance team, cheerleaders and Swoop as they march through The Gateway to the Olympic Fountain Plaza. Participating stores and restaurants will provide UNight specials. The event is free and open to the public.

“Come on Down,” The Price is Right Live: 8 p.m.
Kingsbury Hall hosts the hit interactive stage show based on television’s longest running and most popular game show. Tickets are $50, $38.50, $30 with $15 tickets available for students. More details are available at http://kingsburyhall.utah.edu/performances/price-is-right

Homecoming Student Dance: 9 p.m. to midnight
Tickets: $10 per student or $15 for two students
Students get their groove on at The Depot for the Homecoming Dance, 400 W. South Temple. Tickets may be purchased at the Associated Students of the University of Utah office, Room 234 of the Student Union or online: http://www.asuu.utah.edu/.

Saturday, Sept. 15 – Homecoming Day
5K Run/Walk/Stroll: 8:30 a.m.
Day-of registration 7:30-8:15 a.m.
Advance registration fees: $30, or $35 day-of, per runner/walker/stroller. U students/U faculty/U staff/Alumni Association members pay $20, or $25 day-of, per participant.

On Homecoming Day, participants of all ages and abilities are invited to the Alumni House, 155 S. Campus Drive, for the ever popular 5K Run/Walk/Stroll on the U campus. Online registration is available through Sept. 12 at: http://www.alumni.utah.edu/5krace/.

Kids 1K Fun Run: 9:15 a.m.
Day-of registration 7:30-9 a.m.
Advance registration fee: $12 per child or $20 day-of run

Kids 1K Fun Run for children ages 12 and younger.

The 5K and Fun Run are organized by the Alumni Association’s Young Alumni Board to raise scholarship funds for students. Two students will be selected to receive a $500 scholarship and the two student groups with the largest number of race entries will each be awarded a $1,000 scholarship. Other prizes are awarded to participants in various categories including fastest male/female runner, and runners wearing the best red-themed costume. Utah vs. BYU Pre-game Tailgate: 6 to 7:30 p.m.
Registration fees: $20 per adult; $15 Alumni Association member; $10 children ages 6 to 18; Free/ for children age 5 and under
Don’t miss the tailgate party at 500 South and Guardsman Way (east of the tennis center). Register online at http://www.alumni.utah.edu/homecoming/.

Ute Walk: 5:30 p.m.
When the players arrive join the fun Ute Walk procession north down Guardsman Way to Rice-Eccles Stadium.

Game on the Green Utah v. BYU Watch Party: 6:30 p.m.
To make sure that those who don’t have tickets to the sold-out Utah vs. BYU game don’t miss out on the action, the Parent Association, in conjunction with the Alumni Association, Admissions, ASUU and the Union Programming Council have rented a large 5.5 x 6 story screen for broadcasting the Game on the Green on the Union lawn. Utah vs. BYU Homecoming Football Game: 8 p.m.
