USING SOUND TO TURN HEAT INTO ELECTRICITY

University of Utah physicist Orest G. Symko will discuss his effort to develop acoustic heat-engine devices that convert heat into electricity – a new technology that holds promise for utilizing waste heat, harnessing solar energy and cooling computers and radar equipment. Symko will demonstrate several of the devices during his free public lecture.

New Research Stars for USTAR

Under an initiative to attract world-class scientists and boost Utah’s economy, the University of Utah has hired experts on high-speed wireless communication, computer analysis of medical images and underground storage of carbon dioxide gas to combat global warming and extract oil.
“The University of Utah is pleased to announce the appointments of some of the first faculty members under the Utah Science, Technology and Research (USTAR) initiative,” says David Pershing, senior vice president for academic affairs. “These are the first of what we hope ultimately will be a few dozen outstanding new faculty members under the initiative.”

David Korten to Speak at U Oct. 23rd

The University of Utah ranks 117th out the more than 1,400 colleges and universities surveyed for the 2004 edition of the “America’s Best Colleges” guidebook from U.S. News & World Report. The magazine ranks schools annually based on a complicated system of peer assessments and statistical data.
