U of U Commencement on May 7 to Graduate More than 7,000

Commencement ceremonies at the University of Utah will be held on Friday, May 7, at 9 a.m. in the Jon M. Huntsman Center. The class of 2010, comprised of 7,034 graduates, will receive degrees that morning. The procession of diverse students, who come from 76 countries, 50 U.S. states and 27 of Utah’s 29 counties, will begin at 8:20 a.m. Guests should plan to be in their seats prior to 8:20 a.m. Tickets are not required.

Reading the Brain without Poking It

Experimental devices that read brain signals have helped paralyzed people use computers and may let amputees control bionic limbs. But existing devices use tiny electrodes that poke into the brain. Now, a University of Utah study shows that brain signals controlling arm movements can be detected accurately using new microelectrodes that sit on the brain but don’t penetrate it.

The Osher Institute for Lifelong Learning at The University of Utah will begin its fourth year with a number of exciting new options designed to be inclusive of a wide range of people. Deputy Director of the Peace Corps and Founders Day Honoree to Stress the Importance of Service

The rewards of serving others will be the focus of a talk by Josephine K. Olsen during this year’s University of Utah Alumni Association Founders Day celebration. Olsen, deputy director of the Peace Corps, is one of five Founders Day recipients being honored by the Alumni Association. Her address, Giving Your All & Getting Back More: The Transformative Power of Service, will be delivered on Monday, March 5, 3 to 4 p.m. at the Alumni House, Burbidge Board Room, 155 So.
