U of U Announces New Hispanic Chamber Scholarships and Internship Sponsored by Ivory Homes

University of Utah President Michael K. Young announced that Ivory Homes will sponsor ten new scholarships over the next five years for Hispanic students. Two of these scholarships will be given to the Hispanic chamber of Commerce and be called “The Hispanic Chamber Scholarships sponsored by Ivory Homes.” The announcement was made at the Annual Utah Hispanic Chamber of Commerce Christmas Gala last night. Ivory Homes currently provides twelve scholarships a year to Hispanic students attending the University of Utah.

EPA Makes U Green Power Partner

The University of Utah recently earned national recognition from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and Sterling Planet for its effort to minimize use of fossil fuels. The EPA made the University a Green Power Partner, while Sterling Planet presented the school with a Certificate of Environmental Stewardship.

Governor Walker Announces Fiesta Bowl Gift Exchange Contest

Former Utah Governor Olene Walker announced the kick off of a contest to give away the ‘gift’ awarded to her by the Governor of Pennsylvania. The ‘gift’ of a trip to historic or cultural Pennsylvania was offered if the University of Utah beat the University of Pittsburgh in the Tostito’s Fiesta Bowl last December. Of course the Utes won by a score of 35-7.

University of Utah Study Suggests Cellular Waste to Blame for a Form of Blinding Eye Disease

Gene mutations that impair the ability of photoreceptor cells to properly dispose of waste – and as a result cause the blinding eye disease retinitis pigmentosa – have been identified by vision researchers at the University of Utah’s Moran Eye Center. The discovery raises concerns that carbonic anhydrase inhibitors (medications often used to treat both heart and eye diseases) may adversely affect vision. The study is published in the November 24, 2004 online version of the journal Human Molecular Genetics.

Utes Want Revenge in “Bleed Red” Blood Drive

Attention all University of Utah students, faculty, alumni and fans! Your chance to save a life and support the U is here. Not only will there be blood on the football field when the Utah Utes and the Utah State Aggies meet in Logan, a lot more blood will be banked for the community as well. The University of Utah and Utah State University will go head to head in the annual “Bleed Red” blood drive competition, Sept. 13 through 17, and will culminate Saturday, Sept. 18, on the field of Romney Stadium before the football game against USU. Last year, Utah State stole the “Bleed Red” trophy with almost double the units of blood collected by the U. This year, the University of Utah student body is determined to win back the trophy.

Small Machines Make for Big Competition

Getting ready for the MESA National Event is no small challenge! MESA USA’s National Engineering Design Competition Multi-Purpose Vehicle (MPV) Challenge will be held Saturday, April 24 at Cottonwood High School (5715 S 1300 E) beginning at 10 a.m. The competition involves mousetrap-powered cars built by ten teams from four Utah high schools and five junior high schools.
