El Nino Hurts Whale Breeding

New research shows that global climate processes are affecting southern right whales (Eubalaena australis) in the South Atlantic. A thirty-year study by an international team of scientists found a strong relationship between breeding success of whales in the South Atlantic and El Nino in the western Pacific. The results are published this week in the online journal Biology Letters.

Utah Students to be Honored with Chicano Scholarship May 13 at the U of U

The University of Utah will host its seventh annual Veterans’ Day Commemoration Program on Thursday, November 11, 2004 honoring all Utah veterans who have served our country in military service. Again this year, the U is inviting members of the Utah community to submit nominations for honorees. Eleven veterans will be selected to receive an honorary medallion at a full-dress military ceremony in their honor on Veterans’ Day on the University of Utah campus.

Renowned Pianists to Perform at U of U Summerarts Piano Festival

The University of Utah SummerArts Piano Festival is an on-site camp that offers young pianists and college students master classes and competitions. This year the event will be held Aug. 6 through 9. While festival courses are structured for the 200 to 300 registered participants, special performances by festival featured artists Ana Maria Trenchi Bottazzi and Juana Zayas will be given for the public. Bottazzi will perform on Thursday, Aug. 7, at 7:30. Juana Zayas will present on Friday, Aug. 8, at 7:30 p.m. Both concerts will be held in Libby Gardner Hall on the University of Utah campus.
