Daily Utah Chronicle Named Best Student Newspaper

The Society of Professional Journalists (SPJ) has named the Daily Utah Chronicle at the University of Utah “Best All-Around Daily Student Newspaper” in the Region 9 Mark of Excellence Awards for the 2005 calendar year. SPJ region 9 is comprised of four states: Utah, Wyoming, Colorado, and New Mexico. This year, collegiate journalists submitted more than 3,100 entries in 43 categories across SPJ’s 12 regions.

University of Utah biologists studied the genetics of “whale lice” – small crustaceans that are parasites on endangered “right whales” – and showed the giant whales split into three species 5 million to 6 million years ago, and that all three species probably were equally abundant before whaling reduced their numbers.

Auto-Pedestrian Accident on U of U Campus

An accident involving a van and several pedestrians occurred on the University of Utah campus today at 8:10 a.m. A van traveling eastbound on South Campus Drive struck a group of pedestrians who were headed south in the crosswalk. The pedestrians – three U students and one instructor – were transported to local hospitals and are listed in fair to good condition. All four were able to give their names and other information to the University police on the scene. The U Police are investigating the cause of the accident and should have their report later today.
