U of U Fraternities and Sororities Give Local, Low-Income Children A Safe, Happy Halloween

This Thursday, on Halloween night, more than 100 students from the University of Utah’s Greek sororities and fraternities will celebrate the holiday with 214 local children and their families. The University students will take their Halloween hijinks-a dinner, party activities and a spook alley-to Neighborhood House, a nonprofit agency that provides day care for children and adults based on their ability to pay. The children who frequent the center, located at 1050 W. 500 S., attend part- and full-time preschool and before- and after-school programs.

Fifty-five University of Utah staff members will give their time and labor Thursday, Sept. 5, as they take part in the U’s eighth annual Day of Caring, a day of community service that will benefit the Juvenile Diabetes Association, American Diabetes Association, Guadalupe School, Special Populations Learning Outdoor Recreation and Education (SPLORE) program and the Association for Retarded Citizens (ARC) of Salt Lake.

U’s Olympic Effort Pays Off!

The Salt Lake Organizing Committee (SLOC) today presented the University of Utah with a check for $7,935,000. The money was the fulfillment of a contract entered into by both parties for use of the school’s Rice-Eccles Stadium. The beautiful facility was the site of the Opening and Closing ceremonies for the 2002 Olympic Winter Games. Rice-Eccles also played host to the 2002 Paralympic Games. The payment from SLOC comes seven months early and was not officially due until January 2003.

University of Utah biologists discovered a possible explanation for why chemical sensors cluster together on the ends of bacteria somewhat like noses: The clustered sensors may work together in teams to amplify faint food “smells” into strong commands that make the germs swim toward dinner.

Tibetan Monks To Show and Discuss Film on the Panchen Lama

The Student Interfaith Council at the University of Utah will host seven Tibetan monks from the Tashi Lhunpo monastery located in Southern India and home to the Panchen Lama, in a free public showing and discussion of the film “Tibet’s Stolen Child,” on Sat., March 1 at 1 p.m. in the Post Chapel at Fort Douglas.

Their collaborative findings will be relevant in solving urgent public policy and safety problems, but may also be useful in addressing the geographic dimensions of terrorism – the damage or destruction to terrain, bridges or roadways.
