Join the ‘REDvolution’: Homecoming 2009

This year’s Homecoming Week offers something for every palette. Humanitarian efforts, festive fund-raising, comedy and athletics for the whole family pack the calendar for this year’s “Redvolution.” Celebrations kick off September 19 with the Legacy of Lowell Annual Community Service Day and culminate September 26 with the Utah vs. Louisville football game at 5:30 p.m. in Rice-Eccles Stadium. U of U Faculty to Teach Youth Leadership Course for West Salt Lake Youth

Two University of Utah faculty have designed and will teach a youth leadership course for West Salt Lake high school students beginning this month and running weekly until May. The 14-week course, Mestizo Arts and Activism Project, is the first course offered through Westside Leadership Institute (WLI) specifically designed for youth. The course is based on a participatory action research model that will engage young people as youth researchers using the arts as part of the research process and as a way to engage their community.

U OF U FINE ARTS STUDENTS & NEIGHBORHOOD HOUSE CHILDREN UNITE IN MUSIC, DANCE AND DRAMA

The University of Utah Fine Arts Auditorium will fill with laughter, music, and movement as children who attend Neighborhood House perform the original production “Neighborhood Jungle Pie” on April 25th at 6:30 p.m. The performance is the culmination of a partnership between University students enrolled in the Fine Arts LEAP, “Learning, Engagement, Achievement, and Progress” program, and children from Neighborhood House, a Salt Lake City daycare facility for financially disadvantaged children. In addition, a documentary about the creation of “Neighborhood Jungle Pie” will be screened that evening.

Deputy Director of the Peace Corps and Founders Day Honoree to Stress the Importance of Service

The rewards of serving others will be the focus of a talk by Josephine K. Olsen during this year’s University of Utah Alumni Association Founders Day celebration. Olsen, deputy director of the Peace Corps, is one of five Founders Day recipients being honored by the Alumni Association. Her address, Giving Your All & Getting Back More: The Transformative Power of Service, will be delivered on Monday, March 5, 3 to 4 p.m. at the Alumni House, Burbidge Board Room, 155 So. Central Campus Drive. The talk is free, but the public is asked to RSVP by calling 801-581-6995.
