George S. and Dolores Doré Eccles Foundation $12 Million Challenge Grant Launches U Business School Building Campaign

With the announcement of its largest-ever challenge grant, the George S. and Dolores Doré Eccles Foundation today joined the University of Utah’s David Eccles School of Business in launching its $30 million campaign for new facilities, the first phase of a larger effort to enrich the college”s programs in the decade ahead. The $12 million grant will jump-start the school’s multi-year fund-raising effort to renovate its 1960″s-era buildings with state-of-the-art classrooms and facilities.

U Black Awareness Month Program Celebrates African American Culture Through Visual Arts

For nearly four decades, the University of Utah has explored and celebrated, through the African American Studies Program, the unique contributions of African Americans through its Black Awareness Month Program (BAM). This year’s lineup of events, titled “Jubilee: A Celebration of African American Culture through the Visual Arts,” represents a collaboration between the Utah Museum of Fine Arts (UMFA) and the U’s African American Studies Program and is built around two UMFA exhibits-“African American Masters: Highlights from the Smithsonian American Art Museum” and “Jazz Legends: Photographs by Herman Leonard,” from the UMFA’s collection.

U moves up among America’s Best Colleges

The University of Utah ranks 111th out the more than 1,400 colleges and universities surveyed for the 2005 edition of the “America’s Best Colleges” guidebook from U.S. News & World Report. The magazine ranks schools annually based on a complicated system of peer assessments and statistical data. The U moved up seven spots, maintaining its status as a top tier institution.

The University of Utah Welcomes Renowned Scholar, bell hooks, for Weeklong Residency

The University of Utah, in conjunction with the Utah Valley University Honors Program, will welcome renowned author, scholar, cultural critic and social activist, bell hooks, as scholar-in-residence, the week of March 28-April 1, 2011. Known for her passionate thinking and writing, hooks is often identified as one of the nation’s most influential women and leading “public intellectuals.” Her work and writings cover a broad spectrum of topics on gender, race, class, culture, pedagogy and the significance of media for contemporary American and African American cultures. This statewide project is titled, “bell hooks: Critic, Scholar, Educator, and Philosopher.”
