Researchers report that women’s magazines have ten and a half times more ads and articles promoting weight loss than men’s magazines do and over three-quarters of the covers of women’s magazines include at least one message about how to change a woman’s bodily appearance-by diet, exercise or cosmetic surgery. Twenty years ago, the average model weighed 8 per cent less than the average woman, but today’s models weigh 23 per cent less. Real women’s bodies have become invisible in the mass media.

UNP, SLCAP, and ZIONS BANK TEAM UP TO ADMINISTER FUND TO AID HARTLAND RESIDENTS

University Neighborhood Partners (UNP), Salt Lake Community Action Program (SLCAP), and Zion’s Bank have teamed up to administer an account that accepts private donations that will help the hundreds of residents living at the Hartland Apartment Complex. The funds will support families dealing with rent increases and relocation. Donations are now being accepted at Salt Lake Community Action Program, 764 South 200 West. Demographic and Socioeconomic Study Completed to Prepare Salt Lake County Government for Coming Age Wave

The University of Utah’s Bureau of Economic and Business Research (BEBR) has just released an extensive demographic and socioeconomic study of Salt Lake County. The purpose of the study-commissioned by the County’s Aging Services Division-is to prepare all aspects of Salt Lake County and its local government entities for the coming age wave by building a better foundation of information for programs and services administered by Salt Lake County and local governments.

U Library Receives $5 Million Pledge for Renovation

The Marriott Library at the University of Utah recently received a $5 million pledge for its Renovation-Innovation capital campaign from the J. Willard and Alice S. Marriott Foundation. This is the second major pledge the Marriott family has granted to the library’s renovation project, which broke ground in June of 2005. Pledges from the Marriott family total over $12 million to date.

Community Invited to Experience Diverse Offerings at First “Discover U Days” Celebration

From cutting-edge research to rowdy football, from stimulating lectures to theatre and dance, from Red Butte Garden to the Medical Center, the University of Utah offers myriad opportunities for learning and enjoyment. The community can get a sampling of these and other resources at the first annual “Discover U Days” celebration, to be held Friday and Saturday, Apr. 21 and 22. The two-day event will include the “Red & White” spring exhibition football game, beginning at 1 p.m., on Saturday, at Rice-Eccles Stadium, giving the public a much-anticipated preview of fall Utah football. All events are free and open to the public, with the exception of evening concerts, for which discounted tickets are available.

In honor of her years of public service and her commitment to reading and literacy, the University of Utah College of Education joins members of the community in hosting “A Legacy of Learning-A Tribute to Olene Walker: ‘The Governor Who Makes Us Read'” on Wednesday, June 8. The event will be held at the Grand America Hotel, 555 Main Street, in downtown Salt Lake City, with a social hour beginning at 6 p.m., followed by a dinner and program at 7 p.m.
