Art Graduates Exhibit Work at Senior Show

The graduating senior students from the department of art and art history at the University of Utah will present their work at the 2009 BFA show, to run May 15 to June 11. The exhibition will take place at The Rio Gallery, 300 south 455 west, downtown Salt Lake City. A reception celebrating the exhibit’s opening will be held Friday, May 15, from 6 to 9 p.m. The event is free and open to the public.

Award-winning Filmmaker Returns to U

Award-winning filmmaker and University of Utah alumnus Isaac Chung will return to his alma mater as the first Distinguished Young Alumni Lecturer on Tuesday, Mar. 10 at 7:30 p.m. in the Fort Douglas Post Theatre. Chung’s lecture will be accompanied by a screening of his film “Munyurangabo,” the story of an orphan of the Rwandan genocide.

Aubrey Fisher Memorial Lecture, titled Old Media, New Media on Thursday, Oct. 23 at 7:30 p.m. in Room 1110 of the Language and Communication Building (LNCO). The event is free and open to the public.

Chinese Culture Week at the U

China and Utah may seem two disparate worlds, geographically, culturally and linguistically, but the University of Utah is working to bring those worlds closer together. On March 24 through 28, the first annual Chinese Culture Week will take place at the U, affording opportunities to experience traditional Chinese music, documentary film and lectures on archeology and Chinese-U.S. relations. Only one day into the new year and honors students at the University of Utah are pondering the increasingly complex topic of immigration and the American West in a forum titled “New Meanings of the American West.” The forum, to be held Jan. 2-5, will take place in the Commanders House at the Historic Fort Douglas at the University of Utah. The U’s Economic Impact includes 17 Start-up Companies in 2007

The University of Utah is an economic engine for the State of Utah and 2007 fiscal year-end results prove it. Seventeen companies were launched from technologies developed at The University of Utah within the last year. The companies not only help move research forward through the licensing royalty revenue they bring in, but they provide jobs for the people of Utah and help to strengthen the economy in the state. The 17 companies are based on research in fields such as medicinal sciences, engineering, and fine arts.

U of U’s Osher Lifelong Learning Institute Keeps People 50 and Over Younger

This spring, lifelong learners 50 and over in Salt Lake City and Bountiful have even more chances to learn together through the class offerings at the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute. Mature adults will come together to explore their internal resources, find new dimensions for growth, and reexamine their histories beginning April 2. They’ll study together in courses they chose, developed specifically for them by subject experts. Thirty-four weekly classes and a variety of special events will be offered during the U’s Osher Lifelong Learning Institute spring term. Registration opens March 13.

U of U’s Osher Lifelong Learning Institute Redefines Retirement with Winter Term Offerings

This winter, lifelong learners age 50 and over at the University of Utah will come together to explore their internal resources, find new dimensions for growth, and reexamine their histories. They’ll study together in courses they chose, developed specifically for them by subject experts. Sixteen weekly classes and a variety of special events will be offered during the U’s Osher Lifelong Learning Institute Winter term, beginning January 15, 2007. U of U Department of Art and Art History Presents Lectures

The University of Utah Department of Art and Art History will present two free public lectures, the third and fourth in the 2005-06 Carmen Morton Christensen Visiting Artist/Art Historian Lecture Series. On Thursday, Feb. 9, painter Scott Duce and multimedia installation artist Robin Starbuck will be the featured speakers. On Tuesday, April 4, sculptor Anika Smulovitz will present a lecture on her work. Both presentations will be held from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m., in the department lecture hall, room 158, of the University’s Art Building, 375 S. 1530 E.
